Does such a puppy exist? To get a bit more height out of existing short poles that terminate in a standard 5/8" stud, is there a 5/8 female <> 5/8 female coupler to do the job? I've searched in some of the obvious places but found nothing. What am I missing??

thanks. i should have been more specific to the 5/8" - it is not the threaded fittings (mic stands), but what is found on lighting stands. I've poured over the b&h listings a couple times, manfrotto's page, and a few other suppliers. what i'm looking for is essentially a double ended 'rapid adaptor'. i may just use 2 of them with a 3/8" barrel nut to combine them and trust there isn't too much stress on the threaded fittings. obviously i should get off the 'puter and make one..... but materials aren't always as available as the order button.
like i said, i'm looking to combine shorter poles for added reach. the short pieces i have terminate both ends in the 5/8" stud (lighting fixture).

One option: Bogen Rapid Adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546494-REG/Manfrotto_014_14_014_14_Rapid_Adapter.html) (+ appropriate adapters to get the male end to 5/8") + Bogen Flex Arm Regular (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5147-REG/Manfrotto_237_237_2896_Flex_Arm.html) or Heavy Duty (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/74314-REG/Manfrotto_237HD_237HD_Heavy_Duty_Flex_Arm.html).

Just in case anyone else had use for this .... I finally came by what I was looking for.

The purpose is to utilize a couple short extension poles (compact to pack) and get 8 - 9 feet, or more if clamped to something.
