Title: iPhone/iTouch as a Recorder
Post by: Chris 91 on July 22, 2010, 09:25:15 AM
I was reading about this thing called the "iRig" (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/irig) for the iPhone and got an idea. I think it should work in theory although I don't expect it to catch on or provide perfect results, but here it goes.

# 40$
# 1/4″ jack mono instruments input with Hi-Z impedance adapter – suitable for guitars, bass, synthesizers, mixing consoles
# 1/8″ mini-jack stereo output can be connected to headphones, amplifiers, powered speakers
# Works also with any other apps like tuners, recorders, etc…

So the way this thing works is that you plug in your guitar to the iRig, and then connect that to your device. Now, what if you could plug in your mics into the device instead of a guitar? You could have something like:

Mics -> Pre-amp -> iRig -> iPhone/Touch -> Recording app

Most (if not) all of the work would have to be done by the preamp though, as the iPhone would only act as a recorder (depends on the app used). This set up would make stealthy recording just a bit easier, I would assume, and would be one less thing needed for people that are just starting to record concerts and such. Is there any way this might not work out, or maybe what kind of results would I get from this? Questions, opinions?

PS. This is my first post here, i've learned alot from you guys just by reading a handful of the threads here and I plan to some day (hopefully soon) get a recording set up so I can tape some shows of my own.  :P Thanks!

over the past three years since the iphone has been released, it seems that every manufacture and software developer wants to make something to record with the iphone. the apps and hardware are probably getting better and better but since I don't own an iphone, I'm not interested.
if you want someone for stealth work, take a look at something like the Tascam DR-07 and get a pair of mics. a pre-amp would be ideal for power as well.

this is obviously more expensive but a more solid way to make recordings since you not using a phone.

people new to recording join the board quite often and here's a recent post from earlier this month on the discussion of gear.

That looks to use the headphone jack which is mono only.

So you could only do a mono recording.

There is an stereo analog input capability through the bottom input connector.

Also not clear to me why mics>pre>iRig POS>iPhone is a smaller rig than mics>tiny BB>M10.  Other than not having to stealth in a deck, I don't see the point.  That iRig thing is bigger than most of the small BBs made by Church, Sound Pros and others...

I think the point of the OP and others who continue to bring up these iPod/iPhone products is really simple.    I have a tiny budget.  I want to get into recording.  I already have an iPhone/Pod/Pad/Touch/etc and oh did I mention I have a tiny budget.

No harm in asking the question but I think alot of these budget minded folks would do better if they just hit the search button.
