I'm now using Sony 7506's to monitor in clubs. Plenty of volume with an FR-2le, not so much with a PMD671.
I'm looking at ER4's and like the response curve of the ER4b. My question is volume w/o a hp amp.
Sony sens -106 dB/W/m
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-MDR7506/
Ety's
4b and 4s - 1 kHz sensitivity (ER•4B/ER•4S): 108 dB SPL for a 0.79 V input (90 dB @ 0.1 V; 100 dB @ 1mW)
4p - 1 kHz sensitivity (ER•4P): 108 dB SPL for a 0.2 V input (102 dB @ 0.1 V; 106 dB @ 1mW)
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er4-ts.aspx
The response is more important to me than the volume; I might be using them some in my home studio with a hp amp.
So I'm asking if anyone has found the volume of 4b's insufficient when recording live w/o a hp amp.
I'd be willing to add a battery powered hp amp to my live rig; any favorites in that regard? (that don't cost $$$$$$$$$)
Thanks,
Dave

Don't forget, that the etys have amazing isolation compared to a fullsized headphone, and that's not being taken into account with those numbers.

the sony 7506 have zero sound isolation in my opinion. My audio technica ath-m50s have more isolation than the 7506, but if you want to wear headphones, take a look at the HD 25-1 II - Closed-Back Stereo Headphones. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/507447-REG/Sennheiser_HD_25_1_II_HD_25_1_II.html)
When you look at them, you don't think they would block out any sound but just wait until you try them on.
A plus to headphones is that they are easy to take off and put back on which I don't know if the etymotics are exactly like that. Almost all parts on the headphones are user replaceable so if something breaks, just fix it and don't trash the entire cans.

Yes, that's been on my mind. That's another reason I'm leaning toward to E4b. Even if the volume is lower, I'll hear the signal better live in a club.

this thread may be worth reading for everyone's recommendations.

as you'll read, I didn't think headphones would make a difference but several points were made about being able to monitor the mix as you record.

I've used the 4's and currently have the 6's and have never felt the need for a headphone amp. Even my old minidisc player made the 6's loud enough for subway use.
