Hello all,
After a post from another section on the boards, I have come to conclusion that I will need a sound card with optical inputs to transfer digital music from my minidisc player.
Does anyone have any recommendations on sound cards?
I'm not price sensitive per say... although I would like to hopefully find something that is under $400 or so.
Thanks,
Michael Hager

I think i will be ordering this card in the next few days with the add on card.
After reading a lot of posts here and on other boards i think this card is gonna offer me what I need.
And I have seen a lot of positive feedback on this card as well

I myself asked the same question over on etree a few months ago. I ended up with an m-Audio DiO2496. It works great, easy to install. Can use the internal clock or the incoming S/PDIF signal.
Got mine on ebay for $140. You can get them new from Guitar Center for about that same price, supposedly.
There is only one drawback. There are no analog input. Read again. No analog input. Now I am in the hunt for another solution to that, and it is not that easy.
Good luck,
make sure you get what you need.

If you already have a soundcard with coax S/PDIF or AES/EBU input you could pick up a digital format converter like the Hosa ODL-276 or ODL-312 for ~$50 that may* provide a working solution.
* I say may because I have not tested the bit accuracy of the converters with any gear other than V3 > ODL-312 > JB3.
Just a thought.

The Egosys U2A or ESI-Pro U24 (same company, they just changed names between models) will also take an optical in. It's got optical, coax AND analog in; about $200 new and it's an external box so you can also use it in the field with a laptop. I use the U2A and highly recommend it - a nice little box, about 3.5"x3.5". Also does on-the-fly sample rate conversion if you end up needing it for DAT use later on.

I bought the Terratec EWX 24/96 for my MD transfers. Oade has em, I did a search on yahoo shopping and found the cheapest one, I think I ended up buying from Musiciansfriend actually. Doug at Oade confirmed bit perfect transfers and it's compatible with win xp. If you're running an older windows by chance, I'll sell you a Zoltrix Nightingale for like $20. has optical in and works perfectly, just not compatible with xp.
