Title: Which ext. mic for a Tascam DR-2d?
Post by: MrDome on September 14, 2010, 10:21:04 AM
I'm a noob in this area and I'd like to tape the occasional show (rock, not metal) and also tape interviews. I thought this unit will deliver what I need.

For recording on the stealth, I doubt I can get away with having this big lump in a jacket pocket. What mic's would be recommended that are somewhat affordable and not too huge? Do I need a pre-amp as well? What about effect on battery life?

Thanks.

If you mean small and stealthy-ish mics you have...

Good and relatively cheap:

CA-1s
CA-CAFS
CA-11
CA-14
MM-HLSC-1
MM-HLSO
SP-CMC-8 (AT943)
SP-CMc-4U (AT 853)
Audix 1208 with church cables

If you want to a step up...

DPA 4061
Nevaton MCE 400

Search the forum and you will find lots of similar threads...

You'll most likely need a preamp. Unless you are looking at recording onstage or in the first row or whatever you'll need the pre. I've got the CA-14's and I'm quite pleased with them, they are more low pro than stealth though it is not hard to stealth with them. Chris makes smaller mics than the CA14's so you have options with his products, not sure on build time though. Price wise you may be best going through Chris (get a package deal for the mics and pre) however build time can be a wait.
Back to the pre, you'll need a power source to power your mics which the preamp will cover, so I'd go that route.
