Title: Ca-14 Cardioids Back Vents Question
Post by: Datfly on October 08, 2010, 08:50:29 AM
I have read on here that you should not block the back vents on these by wearing them flush in a hat mount such as a SP type Hat. So my question is can they still be configured in /on a hat in a low profile way that will not degrade them? Is shoulder mounting the best option if I act as the mic stand?

Thanks,
Datfly

I would try pushing them (I think you mean CA-11s?  Because the 14s have windscreens that would prevent you from inserting them in a grommet hole) out of the grommets a little bit so they don't black the vents (I've done it before and they wont fall out I don't think).  Or clip them to whatever part of your body/clothes that you feel comfortable with.  ;)

Not just my mics but ANY cardioid mic where you put the front through a hole and have the back vent inside a none sound transparent hole will seriously degrade the directional characteristics of the mic and the frequency response. Better to use a sound transparent hat.

What kind of Hat is transparent?

What kind of Hat is transparent?

Something with many small holes in it... like those made by a certain British hat company whose name sounds similar to that of a famous bouncing marsupial from down under...  ;)

Basically, if you block the rear holes on a directional mic. it turns it into an omni.

Normally not a very good omni as it was optimised as a directional mic.
