Title: AT853 w/ AT8533x Adapter Question
Post by: Cheesecadet on October 12, 2010, 10:50:37 PM
So I have just a quick question here.  I am planning on running the following configuration:

AT853's (MiniXLR) > AT8533x (MiniXLR > XLR) > Hi Ho Silver XLR Cables (12') > BM2P+ Edirol UA-5 (Optical Out) > iRiver iHP-120

I know the AT8533x converts the 48p voltage down to 9v as not to blow the mics.

Here's my question:
Is it okay to put that adapter between the mics and a 12' pair of XLR cables into the preamp.....OR...would the AT8533x adapter have to plug straight into the preamp for it to work properly?

Hopefully that makes sense?  If you need more clarification please let me know and i will try to re-explain what I'm trying to ask.

Thanks...

No problems having the XLR's between the phantom adapters and the preamp.

Thanks for the response.  I figured it wouldn't be an issue but wanted to be sure.

I am looking at running that configuration with the 853s instead of my studio projects C4's.

I am thinking the 853's will be better sounding mics than the Studio Projects C4'.  I have not been able to track down a recording of 853 > BM2P+ UA5 yet...but I really have heard some smoking tapes made with the 853's so I only imagine that paired with a BM2P+ will be even better.  I am also looking to downsize my rig a little bit while still having the cardioid lopro option.

Anyone have any opinions on what would sound better?

AT853 > BM2P+

or

Studio Projects C4 > BM2P+

Just curious...

Lloyd Cole recorded solo in Lancaster a couple of years ago:

First set is DPA 4060>9100>R09, second set is 853s>Samson phantom adaptors>BM2P+>Iriver. The info file explains the mulitple problems that led to the sets being recorded with completely different gear.

I do believe if you pop into our team NE thread, RUN RUN RUN uses that exact
same set-up and tapes quite often.

EDIT: Here's Seths LMA tapes.
