Did you delete files off the card using a computer, without re-formatting it in the PMD670?

Some cards don't play nice with certain recorders.  >:( Look on the bright side of things; at least it's not freezing up your deck while recording. I say, sell the card.

I think you have some file data on the card still being seen by the recorder, even though the root directories are gone.

Try to erase the card on the deck, even though it seems empty, and reformat it again.

If that does not work, put the card in your PC, and right click on the card reader slot letter for it in "my computer".

Open Properties and in the Tools there should be an error checking option. This can be used to repair a corrupted or otherwise ill flash card, same as it does for drives. After you do this, reformat the card in the 670 and see what happens.

Good luck !

some CF cards that I have run into have a little switch on the side, that limits the amount of space to 2gb.  This was done because some older cameras formatted cards in FAT16 instead of FAT32, and FAT16 can't handle 8gb of space.  Is it possible that your card has a switch like this, and that it was mistakenly switched on?  check the card, and if it does have a switch like that, switch back, and then reformat in the deck.

I have a 671.  I upgraded the firmware (a little scary-the first one failed-did it again and succeeded).  IIRC the reason I upgraded was for correct memory reporting.  Sometimes when I turn it on or change resolution, it still reports incorrectly.  However, after recording, I PLAY a file, it then reports correctly.  I haven't (yet) missed any recordings due to the incorrect capacity. So I'm still using 8gb cards in my "blissfully ignorant" state.

I was able to get them to send me the update w/o shipping it back to them.  The upgrade is one of the more complicated flashes I've ever done, so be warned.  When the first update crashed, I called, and they gave the number of a third party service center.  I talked to the owner and he told me to try the update again.  (I thought I had fried the 671.  If I had, he said it would be about $150.)  He was a really great guy; after the second try succeeded, I called him back and thanked him profusely for saving me $150.  I can't remember the name of the company!
