Title: What set of bookshelf speakers should I be looking at
Post by: Neilyboy on October 29, 2010, 09:09:31 AM
I am wanting to get myself a decent desktop setup to listen to. The 2.1 system that I had in a box in the attic is terrible and I am ready to upgrade. I got myself this little t-amp.

I was thinking about waiting around for the newegg deal to roll around on the polk monitor40 bookshelfs. I think I saw them as low as 120 for the pair once.
Would this be a decent rig for listening/tracking in the computer room?

I'm not affiliated. I just found a link for you to check out.

I have a pair mounted in my bedroom closet. I've seriously hammered these speakers since somewhere back to 1985, and they've held up fine, and still sound fantastic.

Thanks m0k3! I must have looked at a set of these before (someone else must have recommended them on here, when i google searched them for some spec's I had a past visited link to a review which I had read quite some time ago). So they may be worth looking into a bit more. Thanks again m0k3. any other suggestions (as I prefer to buy new, just a thing of mine)..

I use a set of Klipsch KG 4's scored off craigslist for $100 to use with my ebay "Muse" t-amp.  Sounds great!

I've done the same thing with my computer speaker setup. I found a used pair of Paradigm Atoms for around a $100 that have worked out great! You can nearly always find some Atoms on eBay. For their size the Paradigms sound amazing.

+1 on the Paradigm Atoms--very musical little speakers. A little bit over your price range ($200), but a big step up in quality are the Axiom Audio m2. Actually, speaking of price, I found mine on eBay for $150.

I have a pair of Polk R1s that I've been using for movie/living room listening since 1990. Great little speakers and very cheap if you can find them. Sound great with a little sub but I wouldn't use them for mastering since they are very colored..but pleasantly so. They have a low and high freq bump according to the freq response graphs that are included on the back of each speaker.

Thanks all for the replies. I ended up watching neweggs prices for a bit and read on past threads on other forums (trying to see what the lowest prices have been on each set of speakers). I was able to get a pair of Monitor40's as well as a PSW10 sub for the computer room. I am still waiting for the little t-amp to ship so as of now they are all just sitting there waiting.

I then decided to treat myself to a 5.1 system for the living room. Ended up snagging a pair of Monitor60s for the fronts a CS1 for the center a psw505 sub and Monitor30s for the rears all being pushed by a used (ebay great price) yamaha rx-v2500. I can say for the money I have in this system it was money WELL spent. I know there are a few out there that may talk bad about polk stuff but I tell  ya what for the price you can not beat them.
