Title: Streaming live audio from iphone using Ustream?
Post by: F0CKER on November 18, 2010, 12:35:50 PM
Just looking around to see what options exist to stream audio using the iphone and the Ustream app.  I don't want to tether the iphone to a laptop or use a netbook, rather go directly to the phone itself.  I've managed to get a passable signal using the below cable from kv
connectionhttp:

//www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-iphone-micp-a22.htm

only the signal is a bit degraded passing through the iphone TRRS input, headphone amp, etc.  It works, but it's not ideal.

Is there an option to go line level in through the dock connector somehow?  I know you can get line level audio in to the iphone through the dock connector, but not sure if an adapter exists which will allow me to send a signal from my deck.

I've googled the shit out of this topic, no real luck.

Has anyone else been looking into this?

I'm looking to do the same thing with my Droid phone.  The hard part is done-- being able to stream anything using the broadcaster app.  The headset jack is a very high impedance circuit and feeding it a line level signal is certainly going to be noisy.  KVConnection makes specialty cables for this purpose but I don't see how they would actually work.

You've probably already seen this thread but it has some good info: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12085438

Also just found out that the headphone jack input has a 200hz high pass filter on it-- making it even worse for streaming.   :-\

I'm not sure I get the whole picture here.

As you mention, there are a handful of stereo line/mic in adapters, that you attach to the dock connector:

But can you elaborate on the "sending a signal from my deck" part? You want to take a line in signal from somewhere, feed it to your Iphone, and stream it over the internet?

NOTE: the stereo input was pulled when iphone 4 was launched, as mentioned in the Apple thread that Patrick posted.

@Patrick: last time I checked, there were no Android phones with stereo input. Has the situation changed, or are you working with mono?

Yes, send a line level signal out of my HDP2 ito my Iphone 3gs and stream it over the internet with the Ustream Broadcaster app.  I can it right now, but have to go in through the headphone input, which is less than desirable sound quality.

What I meant about the dock connector is I know the dock connector will accept a line level input, but it there an adapter like an RCA ->  Ipod 30 Pin that sends audio into the iphone.  I don't think something like that exists, but was hoping I was wrong.

IIUC, this would either be a software limitation, or a hardware restriction imposed by Apple. There seems to be no option in the software for selecting the dock adapter as audio source:

I suggest you drop a line to the developers and ask if they can/will implement the feature.

Not readymade over the counter, but it shouldn't be that tricky to get a DIY 30 pin breakout connector and solder the jacks to it. There are similar projects posted here earlier.
Or just pick up a 1/8" line input and plug an RCA Y-cable into it:

That says it's made for the Ipod, I wonder if it would work for an Iphone?

I'll look into a DIY option.  Thanks Sunjan!

Here's the main thread for Iphone DIY connectors:

Seems that you can get most parts from Qables:
