Title: Just got used UA-5
Post by: he11yeah on February 18, 2004, 02:53:18 PM
I powered it up and looked in the optical out. it lights red, that makes me think that it is already modified, but when i open it up it looks normal just like a unmoddified one. I am rather confused, if the person before my got it threw oade would there modifications be more descrete than that of a amature?

What are the best setting to use on the UA-5 while recoding akg c1000s>UA5>JB3

I would guess that it is modded, but the only way to try it is to, hook everythign up, and record somthing.  as for settings i think u can do either 16/44 or 48 sampling, so whatever you choose is fine, 44 would just allow you to transfer track and burn without resampling.

as for levels, umm set them at a show, cause every show is gonna be different, maybe not by much, but some.  good luck, now get out and tape something.. peace.

You didn't ask the seller if it was modified beforehand???  I would assume that it is not.

And best setting for your rig?  If you mean if you should go 44.1 or 48, I'd say 48 for the higher quality.  Analog input, 48 K output.

If you are asking at what gain you should set your mics etc, well, that's up to you and the room and the band etc.  There is no "setting".

+T both, but if the Light in the Optical out is on that means that it is running? THat is how the sight said to test it.

What site and test what?  The power?

Try recording something is stand-alone mod (not using USB out) and see if you can get anything.  If it works, I would guess it is modded.  If it is modded, you may want to find out from the seller where they got it modded (if it is Oade, you are in luck - you can get more mods)

Yeah, just because the output lights up doesn't mean anything if the signal it is passing isn't good.

And yes, I have an Oade Mod UA5 and you cannot tell it has been modded unless you know what to look for.  They are super-pro and do the job thusly.

http://ca.geocities.com/dkleined@rogers.com/audio/UA5/ModifyUA5.htm (http://ca.geocities.com/dkleined@rogers.com/audio/UA5/ModifyUA5.htm)

"Test
The moment of truth - power up your UA-5, remove the plastic cap from your optical output on the back of the unit and wait a few seconds.  You don’t need to hook up any source signals to test the S/PDIF output.  If you see red light, you’re a winner (the optical and coax function as a pair).  If not…there’s only 2 places you can go wrong.  Confirm that your cut trace is open (not conducting), then redo your jumper soldering."

Now this is why I am so confused, doesnt look like any of the modded pics there!

have you tested it?  if its modded it'd have the wire running in it, like the pictures, you'd be able to see the cut trace too if you look really close, do you have it opened up?

Do you have a JB3?  If so, fire it up:  UA5 > optical > JB3.  If the JB3 records, you're all set - and given there aren't traces cut and an additional wire in the UA5 it's likely an Oade digi-mod.  If not, odds are the UA5 does not have the digi-mod.  But I'd check with a second optical cable just in case.

If you're not in a position to test the optical out using a JB3 or other device, call the Oade Bros and give them the serial number.  They'll be able to tell you if they've modded it or not.  If they have not, I highly doubt it's been modded, as the self-mod is clearly noticable given the trace cut and extra wire soldered inside the UA5.

if its modded and theres no wire and oade didn't do it, theres somebody else out there that knows a lot about the ua-5 then.

good luck man.

Do you have it connected to a computer?
If it's connected via USB you'll see the light even if it's a stock unit.

The light is on becuase you have it hooked up to the usb. Try powering it up without being connected to the usb. I bet it doesnt turn on the red light
