Title: MD Transfer Question.
Post by: shadow-world on December 24, 2010, 03:24:41 PM
Happy Holidays tapers!

I have quite a large collection of old shows taped on MD which have just been lying around for many years. My plan now is to transfer them to HDD -> Audio-CD's.
Problem is my old trusty MD-recorder and MD-Deck has gone missing (probably with some move).
I have gotten the opportunity to buy a MiniDisc MZ-RH1 from a friend cheap and was wondering if thats good to transfer them with. If i read it right you can move files via USB right into computer regardless if its
HI-MD sourced or old regular MD-discs. Some of my old shows are also recorded in MD LP2 mode and question is if those will be able to transfer via the USB to computer aswell using the MiniDisc MZ-RH1.

Thanks for reading.

Yes you can transfer any MD with rh1 but only with the sony sonic stage software.Ran fine on XP but never worked on VISTA for me.And if your Md has any dropout it will fail to transfer.

what kind of music have you taped over the years ?
maybe I can help with the transfer for some of them.

the way I can do is the following:

Sony MDS- JB940  (for 2LP + 4LP recordings) > optical cable > Philips CDR570
Sony MDS-JE500 > optical cable > Philips CDR570

Are there any of the recorders that will allow you to take old sp/lp2 recordings and transfer digitally to the computer via usb? I've fallen behind on my minidisc knowledge.

hoserama: With the Sony MD MZ-RH1 you can move them instantly via USB to computer digitally through a program by Sony, Sonicstage.

With regular MD-decks you use the optical/coax out and into vice versa on your computers audiocard, else you can use an USB audio interface, for example the Transit - Hi-Resolution Mobile Audio Interface.

That's the ways i know of atleast  ;D

Not true anymore, I just found out there's an open source transfer tool. Anyone intending to do MD transfers should read this, very interesting!
