Title: Repair my D50 or buy an M10?
Post by: Sloan Simpson on December 28, 2010, 05:40:57 PM
So I came home from vacation, set up my rig in the living room (trying out my new shockmounts), and my Sony D50 appears to have died >:(

Looking at Sony's site, the minimum charge to send it for repair is $130.  Anyone have any reason I shouldn't just pick up an M10 (found for $229)?  I'm running Neumann KM-184's> Lunatec V2> line in, so the quality of the internal mics is moot to me.

Thanks

Speaking of the M10 -- when did they start making white ones?

White was not available at first in USA, just red & black. Black wound up being the better seller, so Sony is making deals to distributors for quantity. I found that full compass in Madison has it for $202.30, and I got Sweetwater to match down to $210 with free shipping monday morning, since I'm in the same state as FC, and I'd have to pay sales tax.

So play the price matching game. I heard B&H (I think it was them) will match a price up to 90 days old. J&R had it for $199 or $199.99, and had a $10 web coupon, so $189.99 is the least I've heard of them new. Go get 'em!

For $130 minimum charge for repair it sounds like buying a new M10 would be a better solution.  I really do love the D50 it is a bummer that your D50 crapped out.

Many people are quite happy with mics > pre > m10.

It seems like the prices on this recorder can fluctuate from week to week. Right now amazon has it for $230 and b&h would too if they were in stock; however, B&H is selling used ones at $180. Maybe once they are in stock, the price will drop a little.
