Just came across this forum today or would have posted this sooner. After purchasing a DR-07 last summer, I put it through a number of audio performance tests. The results might be useful to anyone owning one or considering a purchase. Results are compiled into a single PDF file with supporting information. You're welcome to download a copy for personal use.

Thanks, John. I have a DR-07, and I'm sure I'll find this very useful.

Interesting, thanks John!
Which software did you use for testing and creating plots?
How does your testing rig look like (ie feeding the signal from the PC, any other equipment involved, etc)?
Are you planning to do any similar test on other recorders?

does this unit have auto levels for the line in. Also if it does how do you set that??
-
I'm not 100% sure, but considering that the level is set with a physical dial and is more like an attenuator than a gain control I don't think it has auto levels.
The smaller Tascam units like the DR-03, PR-10 etc. do have a setting for auto gain control.

i have a tascam DR07, i noticed the left channel is always higher with 2 or 3 db than the right channel, i use SP TFB2 external microphone.
could this come from the mic?

AGC and Limiter are only available on the Mic input. However, the Mic input will easily accomodate Line level input signals. In fact noise and distortion levels are significantly lower. AGC and Limiter will also work better with an external Mic. The built-in Mics tend to pick up a lot of wind and handling noise.
You can access AGC and Limiter options as follows:
Menu > Input Settings > Mic > Level Ctrl > [OFF-AUTO-LMT]

Yeah, could be. Test the DR-07 by applying the same signal to both left and right channel. The level meters should read the same.

so just us the mic in and it works as the line in. I know this all seems stupid and I have been taping for like 13 years lol. This deck is new to me.

That's correct, as long as the maximum input level is around 0.75 VRMS (line level). If it's much higher you may have to pad it down first before it gets to the recorder. Mic input also has 3 master gain settings (LOW-MID-HIGH). Set it to LOW for line-level work. If PIP is enabled that should be turned OFF.
