Title: How would ORTF be in this room?
Post by: acidjack on January 27, 2011, 09:13:42 AM
Recording a show this Saturday at the Bell House in Brooklyn, NY - a place I have recorded before.  I am thinking about running ORTF, which I haven't tried before - typically I have run DIN or pointed at stacks.

The board is roughly in the center of the room, raised off the floor, and my mics would be clamped where they usually are, to an extension pole attached to the edge of the SBD booth, giving about 8-9ft off the floor with the stacks well above.

The room is wide but not terribly deep.  The stacks are spaced fairly widely but are not at all at the edges; there is substantial space outside of the stacks where, on the one side, there is a bar area, and on the other side, an exit.  The bar is quite far from the stacks and I have never picked up noise from that.

In a room where there are not walls right by the stacks to reflect sound, what kind of response does ORTF produce? I assume you get a more diffuse, omni-like sound without a lot of boominess - is that about right?  In rooms like this in general, is running ORTF a good idea?

do you have nay pics?

ORTF can sound good inside but you need to be in front of the apex of an equilateral triangle  of the main FOH PA speakers.
otherwise I would run DINa 17cm @90°
out doors ORTF can really sound nice
but sometimes in a concrete box  or smaller room you can get a ton of reverberant (unwanted) Reflections.

How far is the board from stage? and how wide are the PA stacks?
you state:

I think yo umay find th eopposite - you  may pick up unwanted reflections - causing boominess.   unless you are way FOB like 10 to 12 feet from stage and the PA has their speakers angled in to aim at the crowd you amy not like OTRF 17cm @ 110°
on stage it sounds sweet
or up front you'll get stage sound + some PA
can you be inside for sound check?  that would help you find the spot!

I don't have any pics, but I would say the SBD is at about the apex of the triangle... and the walls are FAR wide of the PA stacks.

Still, this was mostly just a thought I had.  Just thinking of giving it a try.  I will also probably run some hypers as well, so having a bit more room reflection would be OK.

^^ Yup. Unless I get an SBD patch, I'm just going to run hypers + cards and see how it goes!
