Title: Franken-Mod Nak questions......
Post by: F.O.Bean on February 06, 2011, 10:56:15 PM
Hello folks, Ive been wanting to get another pair of mics to run w/ my LB>R09(to hold me over til the ck63>TB comes out :P :) ), and have been contemplating the franken-mod naks......

Do they require +48v Phantom Power like most HQ condenser mics? Or do they use a 9v in the mic body or phantom adapters or what ??? I am HOPING, once modded, require +48v Phantom Power, so they can EASILY be powered w/ my LB or 722.......

If anyone could give me the lowdown Id really appreciate it ;)

TIA,
Bean

I'm pretty sure the Franken Naks run on 9V. When you use them with +48V phantom power you have to use Naiant PFAs or Audio Technica 8533s/8531s etc. to step down the phantom power.

It seems that Bean is using a Littlebox and they can be configured in many ways.

Switchable +20V/+48V phantom power
Customizable low/high voltage settings; +12V or +30V
+9V plug-in power
+9V power for "three-wire" lapel-style microphones (balanced or unbalanced configuration)
+12V T-power configurable on either main XLR inputs or mini-XLR inputs
Optional phantom power/low-voltage microphone power switches

+9V for "three wire" lapel-style microphones can be used if the Nakamichis are modified for three-wire ( it is two-wire originally).

This schematic is not identical to my own CM-300. The capacitor for padding is 150 pF and the source resistor is 2.2 kOhm.

If P48 is a must, the Nakamichis need to be further modified, with Naiant PFA or simuilar.

Yeah, I got this done to my LB:

+20v/+48v Phantom
IN/OUT Transformers
Transformer Bypass Switch[INPUT Transformer]
Phantom ON/OFF Switch
4xAA Battery sled
DIN3 Connector
Dual RCA & 1/8" OUTS

You could have Jon do mini xlr in with 9v power to run Naks.
