Hello friends,
I'm trying to record at the Metro in Chicago at a packed house, and I'd like something small I can just set on the ledge of the board so that it's above crowd height but I don't need to worry about people bumping it.
I have a bendable t-bar for my CA-14's.
I guess even a small monopod I could tape to the side of the board box would also work.
Thanks!

oh and the base needs to be small - smaller the better

I haven't been to the Metro in a while. Is there any sort of lip to which one could attach a clamp + gooseneck extension?
Or maybe a Gorillapod would do the trick? Adjustable base, two sizes - one small, one large. If you're willing to swing up to my place, or if we can find a convenient location to meet, I have all of the above available for loan (Superclamp, flexible gooseneck, small & large Gorillapod).
-
Also maybe a monopod w/legs? They make a few of those.
I thought about a gorillapod - looked a bit too small, but maybe I didn't see the Large size. I think there is a lip, though not 100%. I'm sure there is one somewhere as long as I had a flexible neck.
I would really appreciate that if possible. I'll move to PM.

I would go with one of these desktop stands with a 6" cast iron base.

With a 5/8F-3/8M adapter you can use cheap extensions made from 3/8" threaded rods and nuts acquired at the hardware store.

I've used the 3 legged base of a guitar stand for stage lip before, a little tape or jimmy rigging & it may work.

or go with this:

that's what I use if space is too tight for a tripod

I even have a boom arm on mine

good ideas, thanks!

If that is not tall enough add a mini boom like this:

If I remember correctly, doesn't Cabaret Metro have an upstairs with small tables against a cast or wrought iron railing that you can clamp to ?
(I haven't been there in a long time)
-
it's possible. We are getting there very early, so maybe we can clamp upstairs. I just want to make sure we're centered enough and aren't in the way.
-
Clamping upstairs to the railing doesn't sound very good, IME, and it's often very difficult to secure space at the front of the balcony. I've wanted to try using my clamp + extension pole to drop my mics down to where it sounds better, but I've never been able to get a spot at the front of the balcony to do so. :-\
We'll see what we can do tonight...we'll figure something out one way or another.
-
Give me a call if you want to swing by and pick this up for the night Brian...

It's got about a 6lb base and a very small footprint. We've had 2 stereo sets of neumanns and a VP-88 on it with no issues and no tape.

thanks J - actually we ended up claming Brian's super clamp to the drink rail dead center at the board - worked perfect. I borrowed it for tomorrow night as well, and I'm going to buy one. Super useful!
