Title: RC battery charged two weeks ago
Post by: Scuba Jeremy on February 22, 2004, 12:29:55 PM
I was going to tape a show two weeks ago, but the show was cancelled. I charged both of my 9.6v RC batteries, and all they've been doing is sitting in my bag for a couple weeks. Will they be okay to power my UA5 for a 3 hour show on Tuesday night, or should I drain and recharge them?

How long will a charged RC battery go without being used before it starts to wear down?

I think the disconnected discharge rate for NiMH batts is roughly 1%/day. I seem to recall seeing that here a few months ago

top 'em up - no need to discharge.  They're probably only at about 70%capacity now.  Self - discharge on NiMh is ~1% /day.

If I were to plug in the RC battery tonight, it wouldn't start a full recharge cycle, you're saying it would just top off the battery? I don't want to charge an already-charged battery, I'm afraid that would damage the cells, but if it will just top it off, that would work.

If you're talking about the 200mAh charger that came with the battery (assuming this is one from batteryspace) then you'd have to leave it on the charger for a long time to damage it...

Nope, Rat Shack 1600 9.6v RC batteries.

Well in that case yer on your own. The self discharge rate still applies if they're NiMH cells.

If its a Ni-Cad battery then I think it would be in your best interest to drain & fully charge to avoid the dreaded memory effect.

Nothin'.  Just top 'em up.  But I run NiMH not NiCD.

how does one fully discharge???

Theoretically, I don't need to as I'm running NiMH.  Just run your ODL-312 for 20 hrs and it'll discharge that sucker.  Or, you could hook up a device which draws more juice if you want to drain it faster.

OK, I'm going deep into my memory cells on this one:

1) NiCds have memory, NiMH generally does not.
2) There is a charger that is claimed to pulse power into NiCds in a VERY specific pattern relative to %-charged value that eliminates the concern over NiCd memory.
3) I do not know if the smart charger from battery space has this feature.

If anyone has any solid info. on this please PM me or post it.
