I'm guessing it's partitioned and the other partitions aren't formatted. What size does the BIOS report for your drive? I'm assuming you're using a PC/Windows system.

CD - Mirth is asking what Operating System you're running:  Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP.

Just guessing by how the partition's labeled I'd have to say that some utility like OnTrack or whatever comes with retail boxed hard disks was used. That, or if you're running some flavor of Win9x when the drive was partitioned somebody answered No to turning on large disk support.

Chalkdust, if none of what I just said makes sense then you're better off having a knowledgeable friend take a look. Either that or go to your local computer shop (non Best Buy or the like) and ask them. They'll either tell you for free or charge a minimal bench fee to do it.

Most certainly, but it is quite possible that the remaining ~27 gigs of free space might not be immediately available.

If you go into the My Computer icon on your desktop, other than A, C, & your CD drive, do you have any other drives that show up? They would most likely be D, E, or F (your CD drive will be one of these).

yes

cd-r drive D:
Hard Drive C:
Floppy A:

goto desktop > click My Computer > click C: > obtain the "Capacity" information.

it will give you "Free" and "Used" percentages as well as size.

if you only see the C: as 2GB TOTAL capacity, then there's a partition on your 30 gig that hasn't been formatted.

i'm running w2k, but i've ran w98 before.  i think you can goto > Control Panel and find a way to format your partition.
(or you could do it by DOS commands).

You may need a hard drive management utility like Partition Magic.  This tool may allow you to create a new partition and format it so you can access it through Win98.

You can always use DOS commands (fdisk, format) to get that partition taken care of. However, if you don't know what you're doing in fdisk, it's easy to blow away your existing partition. If you partition the unpartitioned space, the system should assign it a drive letter. Before you format, go to that drive and check (dir) to make sure it's the 27GB or so drive and NOT your boot drive.
