Title: Naks>UA5>Laptop using Audacity????
Post by: The Other Chris on March 17, 2011, 06:10:45 PM
My recorder is on loan & some friends & I are going to play some drunken music tomorrow night so I was wondering if the above set up would work.  Remember seeing folks running laptops back in 99' but know nothing about the ins & outs involved.  FWIW, it's a new Dell w/ 350 gig hd but not sure about the sound card or anything else.  Not looking for anything stellar, just passable for the night.   For an idea of the nonsense I'm talking about, here's a clip of us a few months ago, my buddy Kelly has about a half rack in him & just goes off on a rant about a 58' Ford.

Thanks for any help guys.

does the machine recognize the UA-5 as an audio device? If not, then it will be much tougher as in my experience, audacity has to see it as a sound source/"card" before you can select it (input or output)

just run analog from the ua-5 into the laptop if all else fails...

I had a lot of headache getting my laptop to recognize the UA-5.
Like page said, some software will default to the built-in sound card, and you might have to disable it in Windows System settings to override this.
It also depends on what OS your laptop runs. IIRC, Edirol didn't bother much about keeping the drivers up to date with Windows Vista, 7 etc.

Im my case, it took a whole day of tweaking and reainstalling the drivers, and once I switched back to the built-in sound card for daily use, I'd have to go through the same hassle again the next time I wanted to connect the UA-5.

If you're short of time, you might have to resort to analog in, or borrowing gear...

Thanks guys for the info.  Running analog in is fine, I could even bypass the UA5 & go Naks>laptop too, just thought the UA5 may help.  Taperssection to the rescue once agin.
