Title: Trying to record keyboard with Tascam dr-07
Post by: jakk on April 04, 2011, 09:07:40 AM
I am trying to get a quality recording connecting my Tascam dr-07 directly into my keyboard. I tried bringing my chord from the Tascam dr-07 line in as well as the Tascam dr-07 mic into the keyboard and there is always noise.

Sounds like your keyboard is overloading/distorting your DR07. You might want to try an attenuator between the two!

Thank you. I did a search for attenuators and found many at various prices. Can you make a specific recommendation?

If by noise you mean hiss or buzz, I do not think you are overloading the unit, instead maybe it's a grounding problem.  An attenuator probably won't help if that's the case.  Overloading would lead to a crunchy distorted sound.

Are you connecting from the line OUT of your keyboard into the line in of the DR07?

Which keyboard?

The keyboard is Yamaha DJX. By line out you mean where my keyboard says phones/aux out? I have tried going from phones/aux out to line in on my Tascam. When I do this I can not hear the keyboard being played. The only thing I hear is the sound of me picking up and putting down the Tascam DR-07.  My Tascam DR_07 has line in and mic. My Yamaha DJX has mic, line in and phones/aux out.

there must be really something wrong if the DR-07 is set into line in. you are recording on the line-in - there should be no handling or grabbling noise from the Dr-07 on the recording, Or maybe it´s a sign of a really bad connection issue (bad cable / Connectors etc ) so there might be some buzzin or clickin when you are moving the cable.

Check another Cable, if the Tascam is really set to Line In Recording.

If the Phones / Aux out on the keyboard is one jack maybe a menu option has set to use it for headphones or aux.

Have you tried headphones in the phones/aux out? Do you hear anything then. This would at least tell you if any signal is going out. If not, the problem is with the keyboard or it's settings. If you hear sound through headphones, then the problem may lie with the DR-07.

If you can hear handling noise, you have not selected the "line in" option.  Your running with the internal mics.

That's what it sounds like to me :) Best of luck. Let us know what it was if you get it figured out!

See pages 49 and 50 of your manual.

I am embarrassed to admit I did not have the recorder set to line in. Thank you all for taking the time to help.
