So after searching a lot and a lot of reading I just want to ask two simple questions about this mod:
1.) If I install the bootloader 7pre4 first to the existing HD and make sure rockbox is working...is all I would have to do next is just swap out the HD for the CF Card adapter and card???
2.) Do I want the jumper to me master or slave? I am assuming master but want to be sure.
Thanks!
-
When I did two of mine I didn't change anything.
When you boot it back up after installing the CF card... if you get an error, you have to slide the hold button and then re-boot. You'll get a boot menu. On that menu (after you un-slide the hold switch) select boot from ROM and make it the default boot choice.
-
My concern is that I don't brick my unit like some others have posted. So I assume that I install bootloader 7pre4 before removing the HD and plugging in the CF adapter I should be fine right?

Sorry, I don't really remember that part of it. It was years ago when I did mine. There are extensive instructions on the Rockbox site. I remember there was something slightly goofy about that bootloader 7pre4 procedure though.

Thanks for the input Chuck. I've read through the rockbox site and it is just a little confusing for me still and I don't want to screw it up. I plan on doing this mod tonight after the kiddies are in bed and I can focus ::)

Best of luck ;) One question tho, why mess w/ the iRiver when you already have a Sony M10 ???
-
I typically run two rigs at each show and I have had intermittent issues with the iriver HD. I like the digi-input from the BM2P+ also! Believe me...the M10 is my go to recorder., love that thing!
-
Download the 7pre4 bootloader and flash the recorder! Then save your rockbox folder on your computer. When you do the mod load the rockbox folder and your in business. You are basically just doing a storage swap.
-
So i already uploaded the current build of Rockbox, and will be doing the 7pre4 bootloader later tonight.
i did notice that since I had the old REP on my recorder that I am not able to change the side of the peakmeters since i went to the current build. Is there a patch to allow me to do this.
Or, does anyone know if once I get the whole CF mod done if I can install an old version of Rockbox from a couple years ago to have the REP again and will it work on a CF modded unit?
I know others have asked about peakmeters before but i could not find it.
Sorry for all the questions.
-
I almost positive once you do the swap you can go back to the REP, but I think most of the REP features are built into the current build.
-
I still use an old version of the REP with my moded HP-120.
-
To install the 7pre4 bootloader...do i just unzip it into the iriver? It's been so long since I did anything with the bootloader that I forget. You all have been so helpful that its easier to ask in this little thread than doing the whole search through 30 pages thing.
Thanks!
-
Okay so I uploaded the bootloader 7pre4 and everything was okay...got the success screen and everything.
Went to bootup and got the ATA-80 error then it says no partition found?
Just to be sure I inserted the HD again and everything booted up fine.
I am re-formatting the CF card now to Fat32 and putting the current build of rockbox and will give it another go.
I'm using a Sandisk 8gb Ultra 200x card
What do I do now?

Start the Iriver with the hold button on! Then you will come to a special menu once there turn off the hold button and set your default start up to Rom I believe. If that doesn't work try each one until one will start w/o the error. I had the same problem when I did mine.

ditto

I tried that and it says the "hold button is on...shutting down" and then shuts down.???
-
Put the hold on > Then turn it on> Turn off hold > then select the Rom option. You have to turn of the hold to select an option.

It won't let me do that.
i put the hold switch on, press the on button (top right hand side of unit)...the screen lights up and says "the hold switch is on...shutting down" and shuts down before I can do anything else?
-
Reset the H120 then try! Also make sure you have the most current build of rockbox on the CFcard. You are positive you have the 7pre4 bootloader? LMK how that works
-
I installed the bootloader onto the HD before removing it and adding the CF Adapter. Was that correct or was i supposed to put the bootloader on to the CF card also?
I copied over the most current build on to the CF card.
The reason I ask is because i have reset the thing numerous times into rockbox and into the original iriver firmware. When I boot into the iriver firmware it says "Check HDD Connection", that disappears and then says "check HDD"
When i boot to rockbox is says "ATA error -80 insert usb cable and push a button", and a couple seconds later "no partition found".
When I start Rockbox with the hold button engaged this is what comes up:
Rockbox Boot Loader
Version 7pre4
Batt: 4.17
Hold Switch On
Shutting Down...
And then proceeds to shut down.
I'm now officially lost.

Do you have another CF card to try?? When you turn it on and get the ATA 80 error press the reset button and see if it loads to rockbox and works. If so then turn it off and turn it back on with the hold button on and see if that works. I'm not sure why it won't start with the hold on. Could be the CF card, but I doubt it.

I'll have to try another CF card later today if I can find one.
Once the ATA error comes up and I hit the reset button, it actually loads into the original iriver firmware...not rockbox. The it says "check hdd connection"..."check hdd".
What could be the problem if it is not the CF card? It appears the the bootloader was installed correctly. Everything works fine when I put the original Hard Drive back into it to test it. This is really frustrating. Everyone says how easy it is and now i have an issue no one has ever heard of it seems.

Format the CF card then put the current Rockbox build on and see if that works.

You'll get it. It sounds like the bootloader is installed, but there is a problem with the Rockbox install.

Did that...no luck

What do you mean problem with the rockbox install? I formatted the CF card to FAT32 and put todays build on to it.
Shouldn't it load right up if the bootloader is installed correctly?
-
It has to be something with the Rockbox install. Did you flash the device after the 7pre4 bootloader?? If not that could be your problem. If it wasn't flashed it won't work with the CFcard

Is that where I went to show all files and scrolled down to iriver_flash...hit execute by hitting the play button and I got a success message briefly? I had to do that when the original HD was installed correct?
Here are the pics of what I keep seeing. The ATA error is when i start Rockbox with the hold switch off. The other picture is when I start rockbox with the hold switch on.
-
Did you flash both the Ram and the Rom?? If that isn't the problem I would try another CF card and see if that will do the trick. I can't think of any other avenues to pursue.
-
Hoe do I flash the ROM and the RAM? Maybe that is it? Is that different from flashing the bootloader 7pre4?
-
Follow the directions here!!!

-
That was the issue...i didnt flash RAM and ROM. It works now! Yeah!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PATEINCE AND HELP!
One last question.
Should I set the default to boot from ROM or RAM. I saw in the wiki that ROM is better but thought I would ask your opinion since you have used it before.
Thanks again for everything!
-
I think mine is set to ROM, but I'm not positive. I got the error 80 so I picked each startup option until I got it to start without the error. I think Rom was the one that worked. I think you will like it alot more with the mod. Lighter, faster and no hard drive noise to worry about. Glad it worked out.
-
So according to Chuck earlier in this thread it is okay to go back and put an older build that has the REP (mainly for peakmeter size) and it should work fine with the CF card mod without issue?
-
I use a current build, but yeah I think chuck uses the REP build.
-
Okay...final question I think:
Does the CF Mod ever have to be defragged or anything like that like you had to do on a hard drive? This is the first time I have ever used a CF media so I have no clue.
Thanks again for all the help!

Once you have recorded on it and backed it up on your PC, reformat the CF Card before each recording sessuion ;)
-
Good to hear that you got it working Cheesecadet! See, it wasn't that tough.
Yeah, I use an old version of the REP, because I just love the balance meter function in that build.
-
I actually had issues with mine last night! I'm not sure what happened, but it turned off and then on start up went to the hold menu. ??? I don't run it as a main deck so it didn't really matter.

When you say backed up...you mean just transfer the recorded show over to my computer right? So I don't lose it during CF reformatting.
Do I have to take the CF card out to reformat it again or can I do it via the USB?
Thanks
-
You can leave the card in the H120 and reformat through the USB, but you will also have to load rockbox since the will be removed with the reformat.
