I recently downloaded a Bruce Springsteen DVD Bit Torrent from STG.

I used my Windows XP machine at work and then copied the files to an external HD (FAT 32).
Each time I try to transfer the files from the external drive to my Win 98 home computer I get the following error message
Can not create or replace bruce.springsteen.3.dvdr.disc1: The parameter is incorrect.
I was able to burn the files to DVD directly from the external drive without any problems.
I have plenty of free HD space.
Any suggestions?

aren't there two formats that a hdd can be in, fat 32 and ntfs, one doesn't allow files that are over 4gb's i believe so that might be why you can't transfer the file to your computer.
i dunno, i'm probably way off on that one, but i do know that if i download a rar'd dvd image file i can't unrar it cuz its over 4gb's and my hdd isn't formatted to accomodate that.

Thanks for the reply. My first thought was the over 4gb file issue. The XP machine is NTFS but the external HD is FAT 32. Also each of the files are all under 4gb. The folder contains 2 .iso files.
Any other ideas?

well you said you were trying to pull ot from the external hd to the win 98 machine...have you tried pulling it from the hd to the xp machine? that'll tell you if it's a problem with your software on one machine or with the drive...

I have not yet tried to copy from the external HD to the XP machine. I'll try this tomarrow but I believe there is an issue with the file itself. I'm able to copy other files to and from the drive while connected to the 98 machine. I got the same error message trying to copy the file to another loaction on the external drive.
I have moved other files including large DVD files this way without problems. These are iso files though and the other files were the contents of a Video_ts folder.
Also I was able to sucessfully burn a DVD of these files directly off the external drive.

exactly how large are the iso files themselves?

There are 2 iso files 1 is 3.70GB the other is 3.26GB.
I'll do a couple of B+Ps for this if anyone is interested. It takes 2 DVD-R or +R

what i'm thinkin is that since the hd is formatted in fat32, it may not be able to transfer those files since they are larger than 2gb...i could be wrong here but that's what it sounds like to me.
fat32 has a limit of 2gb for files.
how did you get them on there?

Thats what I thought at first but I'm pretty sure the file limit for FAT32 is 4gb. I copied the files onto the external HD from a computer running XP.

a longshot but..... make sure the files are not "read-only"
I would also try zipping it down or using FTP to transfer it.

FAT32 hard drives can be up to 2 Terabytes in size and can handle files of up to 4 gigs. The problem is not your filesystem it's your OS (Windows 98).

SYMPTOMS
When you use Windows Explorer to copy a file that has a size of 2 gigabytes (2 GB, or 2,147,483,648 bytes) or larger, the file copy process does not work, and you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Error: Cannot create or replace "file name.xxx". The parameter is incorrect.
CAUSE
This problem can occur because of a problem in the versions of the Shell32.dll file that are included with Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. The root cause is a generic file operation which is used by the shell in Windows 95/98 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 which interprets values that are greater than 2 GB as negative numbers. The problem was eliminated as part of many changes to the newer shell that comes from Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 used by Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
On Windows 98, the Shell32.dll file originates as part of Internet Explorer version 4.0. On Windows 98 Second Edition, Shell32.dll originates from Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, copy the files by using the COPY command from a command prompt.

It is. It is not two gigs. That's the limit on FAT16. Is the hard drive on your 98 machine formatted in FAT32 or FAT16?
FAT32 hard drives can be up to 2 Terabytes in size and can handle files of up to 4 gigs. The problem is not your filesystem it's your OS (Windows 98).

FAT32 partitions can be up to 8 TB's, although I'm sure Win 98 can't address anything that large.
