Title: iRiver H120 input question
Post by: achalsey on May 13, 2011, 04:55:10 AM
So the input jack says optical/line but in the settings the input options are line or digital, is the digital the optical input?  And if so, wouldn't you need a special optical cable that doesn't fit the 1/8th" input the iRiver has?  I don't get it.

Also, my other question (which is probably the same as the one above) is what's the difference between setting the input to line as opposed to digital, especially when the input jack says OPTICAL/LINE.  I've always just set it to line-in except when I patched out of a D50 recently I had to switch it to digital to get the feed.

The input jack is a combined standard 3.5mm stereo input and optical digital input. If you set the input to 'digital' the recorder will be expecting an optical source via that input - for that you will need an optical cable, not a standard 3.5mm jack.

If you Google optical cables you should see some that have a termination that fits a 3.5mm jack. In fact, here's one:

Allen I have an extra optical cable you can have!  The 1/8 is also the optical so you have to switch the setting to digital if you want to run the h120 as a bit bucket.

Gotcha.  Thanks Jon for the offer, but I guess I don't really have the optical option with my current setup.  Gotta upgrade and bring the UA5 into play first, but I don't think thats going to happen too soon.   :(
