What is the difference between the MK4 & MK4 S??
-
The specs and description here tell the story: http://www.schoeps.de/en/products/mk4s/specs
These are for close-miking and have a built-in low frequency rolloff. Response is 80-20kHz and if you look at the frequency response plot it looks more like a Neumann KM150 hyper than a normal Schoeps Mk4.
It might actually sound good for live recording, if one liked a very rolled-off sound...

Meaning they sound just like AKGs!
I have a pair and didn't find the rolloff to be as pronounced as I was expecting. That said, mine are for sale. I got them years ago with some bodies and never even tried them because I have mk21's, mk4's and mk41's (at the time). In the right application, they are fantastic - they are mk4's, with all the detail, etc.

Thanks for the responses! So these would probably sound better indoors??

depends on the level of boom. If you're problem is always reverberant sub-bass/boom in a specific room/location, then it would help, but so would doing a HPF later, if it's mid-upper bass, then I think you'd do better to just learn how to EQ the problem frequencys.
To actually answer your question, between indoors and outdoors, these would sound better indoors.

There is a set on ebay for $350 a cap, but I have seen many schoeps tapers running them.
-
I would not use these for recording live music. The low end is too severely rolled off.
I know freelunch has a set for sale on gearslutz for a very reasonable price.

Okay, I take it back. They don't sound like AKGs. AKGs sound like two skeletons fucking on a tin roof. And these are actually smooth and musical :P
