Title: Has anyone ever used AKG 481's to mic guitar/bass cabinets?
Post by: BobbyHurley on May 28, 2011, 12:55:11 PM
Helping some friends out with a gig tonight and they are short two mics (one for guitar amp and one for bass cab). I have a pair of AKG 480 w/ 61 cardiod caps.

Just curious if anyone has ever heard of using these in this manner.

There is no reason it shouldn't work. My 480s sound great on everything I've tried them on though admittedly never on a guitar cabinet.
Use the 10 db pad and a windscreen. If the amps are really loud set the mics back a foot or more. You can adjust the angle of the mic to control the tone.

It might work for recording purposes, when you can record the amp from a slight distance.
However, in a live setting (where close miking is mandatory to avoid bleed and feedback) it will probably sound very bright, but who knows...

I forget who it is but there is a fella here who does it. He puts them up against his 4011's.

Update - ended up not needing to mic the amps, but thanks for the advice.

Nice. It was jnorman34 who I was referring to. He does studio work, I gather from a few of his posts.
