Title: Toshiba camileo at concerts?
Post by: Serrart on July 03, 2011, 01:15:41 PM
Hi all, I've got as a present a Toshiba camileo, and decided to use it for the first time to tape a concert. Unfortunately, since with my previous camera (a Handycam) I never had got problems of this kind, I didn' think I was too close to the stage to have a decent audio. I know there's little to do now. But for the future? Should I get a field recorder? And is it complicated to use that and a camcorder together?

Thanks for any help I might get.  :)

Hai there. Welcome to taperssection.
Could you describe said problem since it's not described above?
Also include what type of subject material you were recording. IE heavy metal/jazz/rock....
and what type of venue. IE Club/theater/arena..

Overloading/distorting i'm guessing is probably the problem.

Hi Newplanet, thanks for the answer. Yes, the problem is an overloaded and distorted audio. What bummed me was that a friend close to me got a way better audio from an android recording. I was recording  two concerts (one after another), in a public big square (I was front row), the genre was mixed, since there was a songwriter (Dylan Style) and after him a pop singer.

You're right the camcorder is tiny, obviously I would have bought another kind, but since this is a present, I'm trying to see if I can use it in any way also to record concerts. Even buying an external mic or digital recorder, if it's possible to use one of those with this camcorder.

You could easily buy a hand-held digi recorder like the sony m10 and sync up the audio and video after with software.
Are these live events taper friendly or would it be undercover work?

I'm sure someone will chime in here soon with some great suggestions also.

Thanks Newplanet. Some of the events are taper friendly some aren't. About the digi recorder I was thinking to Zoom H1, is it a good choice? I've seen the price isn't too high.

I think you're right but right now it doesn't fit with my budget unfortunately, and I've got other concerts this summer. I'll try to upgrade to sony M10 as soon as I can

If you don't have an audio input jack (mic-in or line-in) then you don't have much choice.  But in general I think recording audio and video to 2 separate devices and syncing them afterwards will get old fast.   An M10 is $200, and using the built-in mics probably won't sound great, so after that you may end up spending another $200 for mics and a battery box.  Then you have to go through the tedious process of syncing audio and video.

If I were in your shoes, and I wanted to do this on a regular basis, I don't think I would go that route.  For the same money (or less) I would think about trading up to a different video camera that had an input jack, along with a stereo mic that will handle the sound levels.  I can't recommend any particular models, but I think probably they exist.

The majority of people on this board are audio tapers.  There are probably a few video tapers, but there are in the minority.  You may want to check some video-taper forums and see what they recommend for concert level audio.

Thanks SmokingJoe,  I didn't realize it was a forum mainly for audio tapers, anyway all your advices have been really useful

No problem sir. There are quite a few people here that do indeed run video.
Beatkilla does both. Maybe AFTER posting in the video thread I linked, you could shoot him a PM.

I wish I could help you out a little more bud. Like joe said, I think you would be putting more $$ into the audio side of things
where it could equal a new camera with more robust audio options for what you are looking for.

Still scratching my head on the phone audio coming out better than yours though. ???

I'll go to post now. Yes, the phone thing was quite humiliating.  >:( ;)
