Title: JW 460 Mod
Post by: thunderbolt on July 04, 2011, 12:55:24 AM
Holy crap, it's $475, and I hope it's per pair. :o  I had been monitoring the site for a few months and the price has steadily risen.  I know the preamp bodies are a pain in the ass to work on, but he appears to have increased his prices significantly over the past few months.  Makes doing this not such a slam dunk at those prices....

Skip the mod and buy better mics instead.  Even if that price is for a pair you will be upside down in your mics and never get what you paid.  Mods just don't hold their value.

I had been thinking about it, but at this point, I'm OK with what I have.

I have modded some of my 460s like JW does. If someone wants to have his 460s modded and is not afraid sending them over to Germany, i could do the same mod.

I too was watching the price and considering the mod for the pair I recently purchased in early May and just noticed the price increas from 150 (I think) to 475.  I emailed him for clarification on the price (pair or per mic) and still waiting to hear back.  Yes. . . I think I too am happy with what I have, been pulling some great sounding tapes. . . If I get confirm on the price will post.

I have quite a lot of respect for Jim Williams but must sadly confirm from experience what has been pointed out above: Modified microphones can be quite difficult to resell at all, let alone at a price that lets you recover what you paid for the mods. The number of buyers interested in such items is far less than those seeking the stock item.

Furthermore, the people who want modded microphones tend to be quite choosy. If you had your mikes modded in 1996 they'll insist on the version that became available in 1997. If you paid $400 extra for option X, they'll bid less even though option X can be switched off entirely, because they don't like that extra switch on the circuit board--and so on, and so on.

At some point I should really tell my whole story of sending three kinds of microphones to three different microphone "modifiers" including Klaus Heyne and the late Stephen Paul. My experience with Jim Williams was quite good as far as I was concerned, but I decided to sell the microphones (a pair of AKG C 414-B ULS) on eBay after a while, had to place the ad more than once before I got a single bid, and took a loss of several hundred dollars on the deal. On the other hand, I completely suck at selling things so YMMV.

I think the moral is:  buy the mod if you want it, but be prepared to hold onto it  or risk selling it at a loss.
