Title: Oade ACM PMD661
Post by: Since85 on July 15, 2011, 01:57:56 PM
Hi all,

After discussing this with Doug over the past couple of years, I was able to get an "ACM" 661. I can only compare to the ACM671, as I wanted to get something smaller, but still have a good quality "all in one".

Well, I have used it a few times now, and here are my initial impressions:
1. The metering (LCD, not LED) is awesome! Very smooth with cardiods or hypers
2. Very quiet deck (low noise floor)
3. I believe the transients, detail, and imaging are right up there with the ACM671. Perhaps the ACM671 has a tiny bit more width to the soundstage, but this ACM661 is pretty sick.
4. I question if I put a V2 or PSP-2 in front of the deck, if it would make a noticeable difference. I did not think that it enhanced the ACM671.

I really like having an all in one, but getting more towards D-6 (vs. D-5) size. I do not think I am missing out not running a pre and/or A/D in front of this thing.

On another note, just did the 2.03 firmware update, and easy download and procedure from the marantz pro website.
Lastly, before doing the update, I got a "Card err 1" message (Lexar pro 16 gb card). I pulled the card out, and put it back in, and the problem seemed to be fixed. Anyone else get this? Perhaps the 2.03 update resolves this issue.

Have you had any issues with your lexar card since the firmware update (ver. A2.03)? My marantz is on the fritz without the FW, won't read the lexar I got with it, and I'm trying to avoid having to send it down to Oade (who insists he needs to do the firmware install).  I'm trying to find out if the FW update is as easy as it sounds so I can save the shipping time.

The PMD 661 actually has an OLED display...  (Organic Light-Emitting Diode)

The FW update is easy to perform but Oade doesn't recommend performing updates on his modded units for some reason.  FYI: The download process has recently changed from D&M, it now requires a log-in to be able to get the download where anybody used to be able to grab it before.

PMD661 vA2.03 Firmware Details:
1.   Expanded SD card compatibility.

Previous firmware versions resolved issues below:

1.   By using pitch control, the unit locks up at audio files recorded at 24 bit 96 kHz.
2.   EDL marks corrupt file date created properties.
3.   When unit is restored after abnormal termination, data's chunk might not be correct.
4.   Malfunction might occur when using an SD card that is formatted by PMD661 in other equipment.

So, what makes it "advanced" over the normal Concert Mod? Just curious what Doug said he was doing additionally to make it an ACM. I know on the machines with separate line and mic input jacks, the ACM includes the line path, but he told me the 661 having a shared and line/mic switchable XLR inputs did not require an ACM in the way the 671 did. This was back in 2009, so maybe he found out otherwise since? Thanks
