Title: What kind of mics is it possible to power with a BS48i-2 from Neumann?
Post by: chrisv31 on July 23, 2011, 01:38:25 PM
Hi,
I've found a BS48i-2 with a very good price and I would like to know if it's possible to use it with:
http://www.neumann.com/?lang=fr&id=current_accessories&cid=db_current_accessories&dbid=82

-MILAB VM-44
-MBHO 603A
-Neumann KM100
-Schoeps
-DPA 4011C

Thanks in advance for your help
Chris

Any and all 48V microphones should be able to be powered by this.  You may need to make cables because they are 5 pin XLR and you will need them to break out to dual 3 pin, but it should work with pretty much any mic that requires P48

Thanks for your message :)
i have just completed the order  !

Do you know someone able to build me a Y cable : 5pin XLR(M) to (2) 3pin XLR(F) and a  5pin XLR(f) to 3.5 mini to the deck?

cheers

Maybe it's a stupid question but i've got a little doubt about the Nemann BS48i-2.
by example if I plug 2 milab vm44 on it, the output signal is  A stereo Signal or a MONO signal?

Thanks  :)

It wil be two separate signals.

Note that there are a few mics out there that needs more than 5 milliamps, most notable the Earthwork ones. Milab will be fine.

It will be stereo.  You need a cable to break out the 5 pin output to a dual 3 pin XLR.  Gunnar is right though - check the requirements for the mics you buy first just to be sure it will supply adequate power.

A few folks in the first post are no longer making cables but many are. Or scroll to the bottom and add Ted to the list.

I can make you one as well if you like.  I have all the connectors on hand anyway.

Thank you all for your messages :)

Last Question
If I plug 2xmilab vm-44 link or 2xMBHO 603a can I use a custum cable ( 3xlr to minijack) for the output signal (I have a ls10 from Olympus for the moment as ).
I'm a lost with the balanced and non-balanced signal (shame on me, I know :) )
Thanks
Chris

I believe it should work. A custom cable, 5pin xlr to minijack.

I used to use a BS48-i2 to power my B&K 4011's with great results!

Other high-current 48-Volt phantom powered microphones include models from CAD (Equitek) and some Shure KSM condensers, as well as the original AKG C 451 (not their modern-day "C 451 B" which is quite different). These would not be powered reliably by a supply that puts out "only" 5 mA/channel.

I have to put "only" in quotes because I well remember the 1970s, when typical 48-Volt phantom supplies could only put out 1 - 2 mA per channel.
