im not sure if im ready to make a huge investment in gear just yet, ive been through a couple cheap mics which were crap, im wondering what everyones experience has been with C4`s- would you reccomend them for someone with a small budget- say up to 600 on mics
-
If you can spend up to $600 you can do a lot better.
They are definitely good mics in the sub-$250 range though (used). Much better than most other alternatives.

Nothing wrong with the C4s, and the multiple patterns make it pretty versatile. Good bang for the buck. I loved mine when I had 'em. They served me well. However, as TNJazz said, for 6 bills you can find some better.
For example, check the yard sale section...Like this one http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=147745.0
Have fun.

x2 In your range, I'd jump at those AKGs in a heartbeat. Or a new set of Busmans. Listen on LMA and decide what you like better. The AKG being actives makes 'em especially handy.

As stated above by the others the c4's are solid mics that can produce good results....I used a pair for years and loved them in most cases, ESP the price....however as stated above you can get a pair of mics in the next level of quality for 600...best of luck!

Just go with the c4's. There is a set for $175 now in the YS. Even if you get other mics, you can use these as a second/loaner set.
Nothing wrong with these. I've got one set loaned out, and a second set as an "installed" rig in a local pub.

First off you know you like taping which is a good thing. If you were just getting wet I'd say go for the c4's.
But since you have taped and have a $600 budge for mics there's plenty to look at right now in The Yardsale.
Start doing some listening research as we aren't aware of what you like. So here are a few suggestions.
The akg 460's w/61's would put you at $650.

OR
These Audix mics for $575

They would both be a step up from what you were running before IMO.

100% Agreed :)
I, personally, would go for the AKG 460/ck1 setup............
