I've noticed that there's a heck of a lot of info, manuals and other data in the technical reference section. But considering how important this is to so many here, I'm surprised that there isn't a central microphone reference section that lists only microphones by model number, perhaps even subdivided by type if needed, with all the relevant basic data for each and possibly links to manufacturer webpages, and maybe even serious reviews.
Apologies if this already exists and I missed it!

Great idea! And yes, TS should have a mic reference section. Thanks for volunteering.* Please can you let us know when you expect to have the list compiled and organized? :P
Edit to add:
* This is my way of saying: TS is what its members make of it. All the organized and/or compiled content you see here is a function of someone deciding it was worth doing. Could there be a whole helluva lot more content organized and compiled? Absolutely. But the question always remains: who will invest the time and effort in doing it?

There is an excellent database of microphones and information about them kept up on recordinghacks:
http://recordinghacks.com/microphones
Overall, it might just be easier when people find mics that aren't in that database to try to get them added to recordinghacks, rather than trying to re-invent the wheel here. From my standpoint, I usually find that it isn't too hard to get info on mics with a quick google search, even dis-continued and vintage mics.
Now info on discontinued and fairly esoteric preamps like the EAA PSP-2, that can be hard. We do have a knowledge base archive section where user manuals can be placed (and the PSP2 manual is there iirc). This could be a good place for manuals and spec sheets on mics, though it wouldn't be as organized as the recordinghacks one.

Agree - there have been numerous efforts over the years to create guides, and other compilations - and they never seem to come to fruition...
I wll say this - I dont like the equipment team threads. I'd rather these devices had their own sub forums - that would make finding info MUCH easier.
Under microphones, we should have sub-forums for Schoeps. Nakamichi, AKG, etc - nobody is about to stop using those...clearly that would increase mod time...but you might get better results given the way the search function works...

no longer available and also not available from the wayback mahine
Michael Hartkopf's Microphone Database http://members.aol.com/mihartkopf/
anyone have a locally archived copy or know how to get in touch with the author?
Also check manufacturers sites for info on specific models, esp those no longer in production though info may be more difficult to ferret out; for instance info on old ElectroVoice mics: http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Microphones/EDS/

Seriously, I totally expected this notice ;)
I started to compile these links in this thread (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=148129.0). I don't see the need to re-invent the wheel. Maybe it should eventually become a sticky people can add new resources to.
I think mshilarious's suggestions about making some effort to describe common taper setups is a good one, including custom adaptions and the less commercial mics in common usage here. It might also be useful to have a "slang" dictionary thread: BAwindscreen, 402's, Church 11's... ;)

another link - Mix magazines' microphone section http://www.mixguides.com/microphones/ of particular use to me are the New Products and Online Resources sections
thanks for starting that other thread; hopefully it can be mainly links/info and not a general discussion area which is why I'll post any more links I find in my bookmarks here rather than there

This kind of brings an interest thought to my cranium..... why don't we have a sections where comps can be archived to illistrate differences. I am talking something more permanent then "you send it". I know we have some Archive Mods on here. Maybe we could have them add a Mic comp section on the music archive and post a link at the top of the mic section. People who do comps can upload their comps for future refence. While I realize comps have many variables and no comp can truley be scientific. It would be cool to have a place where people can be refered to when they want to hear those differences. Any thoughts?
Peace OOK
