Title: This ever happen to anyone (R-09hr playback anomaly)?
Post by: RAQnasty on August 18, 2011, 07:07:41 PM
I was taping a few weeks ago using CA-11s > preamp> edirol r09-Hr.  Set the preamp to +30db, recording in 24/48.  First set sounded great on playback, so I kept the same basic setup (small gain tweek) for a show later in the day.

once that second one was over, I tried to play it back to listen and it acted really weird.  Edirol nearly froze-up, buttons unresponsive or veyr slow to respond and playback sounded heavily distorted, clipped, and even slowed down.  Really dissappointed at that time - however, the file transferred to PC with no problem and from there, the tape sounded great.

anyone know what that is about?

its strange, never happened before, had the unit about 2 years now.

the problem appeared to be specific to either that card or that particular file.  If I swtiched back and forth and went back to the first recording (on a separate SD card) it played normally.  second recording wouldnt.  Tried new batteries, no change.  But again, once transferred the recording was fine and one of the best I have pulled.

what I really wish I knew was whether or not it sounded like that had I been monitoring it live.  I did not monitor however.

First off, I LOVE your name RAQNASTY :) Hmmm, weird. As long as it transferred fine, I wouldnt worry about it too much :)

if you are the "pittsburgh area" Bean, I know you!

anyway, yeah it transferred fine, but I would love to know why it did this.  My main worry is that one day I will monitor something and it will playback in real time like garbage but the playback wont be accurate.

just weird.

I've had my HR for a little over a year and around March of this year,  it did a similar kind of freakout when I was playing back something I recorded.  It froze my Edirol and I couldn't turn it off (had to remove the batteries).  But the file was fine when I transferred it.  I'm kind of paranoid about it since I too don't know what caused it, so I just don't deal with the playback anymore and instead just go straight to transferring the file and listen to it from there.

Funny you should mention this.

I had a similar issue happen just yesterday:

(See: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=148231.msg1896840#msg1896840)

Are we maybe looking at a firmware bug?

(Maybe getting rid of my recording Walkman was a mistake... :P)

...I'm using v1.05 and just had a similar experience -- when I tried to play back the file on the r09hr, it would start to play it with all sorts of nasty clicks and static, and the clock froze, the forward button wouldn't work, and the only way to shut it down was to remove the battery.  When I transferred the file to my computer it is perfect.  Not sure if it's the batteries, the SD card I used, or something else.
