Title: Pre for Laptop Recording
Post by: shroominhumpy on March 02, 2004, 08:00:12 PM
I think I will be getting a laptop for my high school graduation sometime towards the beginning of June. I want to utilize this baby in every way possible, and since I am currently stuck in the world of MD, I think laptop recording would be a nice way to go. What sort of pre/ad combo would you guys recommend. I am looking to spend under $400 and am so not opposed to used gear its not even funny...remember this is a high schooler's budget, so please don't offer up V3>sbm-1 combos and stuff like that. I realize that the UA-5 is probably the route I would go, but I am just curious about some other, possibly lesser known suggestions.

Is this a decent unit? I think they can be had for relatively little ~150 used. And can handle the 24bit stuff.

Delta Audio USB Duo 24Bit/96kHz?

I'd go with the USBPre.......especially if there is one for sell. I have one, and I love it.

24/48 is max......but, how many times do you REALLY think you would opt for the 24/96?? Maybe a few times, but like I said, I really think about the USBPre

Can the USB pre work standalone (I think not)?
How is it powered?

powered by the USB out on the laptop

this can either be good or bad, deppending out how you look at it

no standalone, no digital out when recording, only during playback.

the duo is not a good choice because it runs off of AC not DC.  if you can't swing the cash to get a USBpre, i'd say go for the UA-5 since it also supports USB.

another option for you, that for some reason most people dont seem to use at all, is the digidesign mbox

I know a taper with the mbox.  I should ask to borrow it for a show or two to see how it sounds...

Isn't the MBox exclusive to Pro Tools?

I just started using the Firewire 410.  I like it so far, but my opinion is only preliminary.  If your laptop can power the unit via firewire, it's a super choice.  It runs on DC if you can't.

I liked the Duo a lot, but as noted above it requires AC (which I often have available).

not too familiar but this seems to be a great choice and less than the budget of $400, but don't forget the battery.

My 410 may be for sale because I also just got a UA-5.  Neither by itself does all I want, since I record to both NJB3 and PC, but I feel like I've got too much stuff (this is just the tip of the iceberg). One or the other will probably go.

UA-5 and a 9vdc battery pack w/ charger will set you back just under $300
You could do a lot worse.

What are you using for Mics ?
