I am considering a new recorder. Here is what I need it for:
1. audiencerecording using AT831 mics (or any for that matter): AT831 > line in (phantom powered) > 24bit recording
2. average recording 24 bit recording (transfer old DAT/MD/tapes etc) using optical connection: Source optical OUT (behringer Ultramatch pro 24/96) > Optical IN on the recorder > 24 bit recording to SD/Flash type card
Currently looking at the M10 as a recording unit, but it lacks digital in and I need a batterybox (no real problem as i am using it already with my Iriver).
Second option would be Marantz pmd 661. It records 24bit digital in and I won't need my batterybox/preamp (JKlabs) anymore, right? Or do i still need it for the preampfunction? (I am hoping the Marantz could do that).
Any advice on this with a budget set to 500 euro. I am open for alternatives, but I want to keep it out of the PC (so, no soundcard).
The Marantz PMD 661works fine without an external preamp, it has XLR line and mic level input with switchable phantom power built right in. It's a nice solid unit and an excellent choice for your budget.

I just bought an Oade warm 661 here a month ago, and it really makes cards and hypers shine (warmly of course). Great deck!
Thanks for the replies. I am located in europe so if someone there wants to sell it, get in touch
