When I was going for small and inexpensive, I was looking at stuff on sound professionals.  You can get the CMC-4 mics (SP modded AT 853's I believe) and a SP-SPSB-1 batt box.  You may or may not want to get the preamp in it (I don't know anything about DAT decks).  It's a $140 option, but all of that would still come in under your budget.

A lot of people on this board really like the Audix Mics. They would be in your price range and I have heard some tapes made with them that I really like. You could go Audix Mics>Rolls PB224 phantom power supply>AD-20 or something like that. The SP models have been known to distort at high SPL levels. Active cables are also an option, but I think out of your price range.

I think it's that the -6 is binaural and the -4 isn't.  I could be wrong though.
