Title: Mic Stand for Air Travel?
Post by: cashandkerouac on October 12, 2011, 06:50:21 PM
forgive me if this question has been asked and answered, but i'm looking for an 8' - 10' mic stand / light stand that is compact enough to take as a carry-on for air travel.  any suggestions, recommendations?  so far this is the most compact stand that i've found, but am not sure how stable it will be at full height (minimum height is 18")...  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/157968-REG/Lowel_UN_33_UN33_Light_Stand_7_75_.html

I usually put my stand in one of those Camping Chair Bags and carry it on.  I have never had an issue.

I use a camping chair bag myself but for flying would definitely want to pick up something better.   A padded LaCross stick bag could make a better stand case for flying.

I carry mine on.  Rig in a Porta Brace over my shoulder and mic stand in the other hand.  Never an issue.  Even my big ass festival stand fits in the overhead compartment.  Have learned to always carry it in the vertical position, however; folks think its a firearm of sorts otherwise  ;D

exactly what i do as well.  it will fit in the overhead, but if you're late on the plane and they're full, the flight attendants usually don't have a problem stowing it in their area.

I have a manfrotto 3373 that fits in my carry-on.  It goes up to 7+ feet.  i usually end up getting there and clamping, but one never knows.  i can carry on that and my rig, so i hardly ever check anything.  does cause some consternation on the screeners parts, they usually pull it out, or when i tell them its a tripod it often doesn't come out.

same here; this is the best value for an 8' stand, and it is super short when collapsed. I use this in smaller/quieter venues where floorspace is at a premium and I don't have to go up so high.
