Title: Which recorder to buy on a budget?
Post by: AndyLGR on October 18, 2011, 08:53:20 AM
I am thinking of buying another rig, I currently use CA-14 omnis with an Edirol R-09.

But I will be getting some new cards and wanted to set up another taping rig. I aren’t looking to spend a fortune on the recorder, Ideally don’t want to go over £150 (approx $200), but I want something decent.

I’ve heard plenty of recordings using Roland R05, iriver Ihp 120 or 140, Tascams, Zooms, Edirol R-09HR, Sony PCM-M10 (maybe a little out of my range).

But I’m after some good advice on basically getting a decent recorder on a budget. Thanks.

I would go either the PCM-10 or the R09HR.  I personally use the R09HR for all my stealthing needs..... and some open needs as well.  The PCM-10 has the best battery run times of anything out there.  I haven't used one or stealthed with one..... some others may be better at answering that question.

As for open recording the PCM-10 wins solely on the battery run times...everything else is statically a dead heat...both are great sounding decks, both are easy to use, both support 32gig cards, both have a good track record.

Price wise the PCM-10 can be had a little cheaper than the R09HR..unless you buy used then the R09HR wins that fight.....

You can't go wrong with either...

Peace OOK

The best budget recorder going is the Sony M10. May be a little over your budget, but do some extra saving. It'll be worth it.

If I was on a budget, I would buy a used R-09.

Why do you need a new recorder?    The R09 sounds excellent.  It runs just fine on rechargeable batteries.

I've used an r09 for years, after selling my 722.. I only recently bought an m10 because I do nature recordings that go on for hours and hours unattended, and the hotter signal handling of the m10 is useful with my psp2 preamp.

I would not expect a new recorder to improve the sound of your recordings.

Mics, maybe a preamp.

^^

Since you only have omni's, I would recommend a pair of cards to make your taping exploits more flexible.

^^ I think that about sums it up.  But since the OP is asking about recorders, I'll throw in my 2 cents. :)

I could be wrong but I believe AndyLGR might be in Europe?  If that's the case, the Sony and R-09HR decks are considerably more expensive than the others he listed.  It's been discussed in other threads that, for European tapers, the Roland R-05 is becoming the small recorder of choice due to its price point and build/reliability.

Ever likely to have board access?  Tascam DR2D, 4 tracks clock-synced for $150.
