This came to Sonicsense from our distributor:
To All-
Please be aware that one of the Sony factories in Japan, after taking a look at worldwide demand, has shutdown without advanced notice to Sony US, production of the CDRW33, CDRW66, PCMR300 and PCMR700. The PCM R500 will stay in the line until further notice and sales for this piece have been brisk. Sorry to be the bearer of this discontinuation news. FCM is researching Sony's selection of Consumer crossover units to see if we can find any units that meet the specifications of the discontinued W33 and R300. Will keep you abreast if we find any.
get 'em now, before they're gone.

this really isnt a huge shock to me, it seems like everyone is trying to phase out their DAT production
-
ALOT of ppl have switched to jb3's too, when is sony gonna have a nice lil HD that can do 24/192 ???

this has been coming for years, sony might finally get there act together and start making HD recorders
-
its a pretty small niche market for field hard drive recorders though, thats why they havent been around sooner
-
wouldn't that niche market be the same niche that was driving the DAT tho? Are there alot of uses for a DAT? j/w
-
im talking on the field level though, i know the original post was on the home decks. there is a wide market for rack mountable hd recorders. hell i own a HD24

i was saying in general, including rackmount as well as portables
-
im talking portables, agreed jonny, but there is the old dat market ;)

im sure there sitting there over in japan thinking about what new format to bring out that will be as useless as the one they came out with before, history repeating itself, always works out. i hope sony can get something that is actually gonna live through the format wars

Sony is pretty good at doing that!! I would think that the market that was there for DAT is also there for a nice professional HD unit. Seems like most people are going two routes latly: jb3 or lappy. Laptops, to me, are too big and too fragile for live taping. Not sure about the jb3 yet.
More than likely is Sony comes out with a new recorder it will require a special cable or some other pain in the ass. :P

oh joy, an 11-pin POS connector :P
they NEED to stick to their/phillips standard coax, WTF, they named it and dont even really use it
-

-
you mean S/PDIF
thats what i was getting at, yes

The CDRW33 and CDRW66 are pro CD Recorders.
-
wasnt DCC a Phillips format?
Marantz never made a DCC unit(that I know of)...seemed like you could only find Phillips DCC decks.
a buddy of mine here in Richmond still has 1 of those decks...works pretty nice. it plays standard casettes as well
-
phillips owns marantz.
here's a pretty cool link to the story of dcc:

Solid State recording is going to be it. The marantz looks cool:
http://www.american-digital.com/prodsite/product.asp?p=1099&c=192&name=MarantzPMD670
but note where it says "when media becomes available" for duration of recordings. 64 Mb isnt enough for the tuning up!
No moving parts. Memory sticks...like StarTrek. And sony is the king of memory sticks.

the media is just sooooooooooo expensive for anything of long duration.
jr
-
yep, ill stick w/ the jb3 for AWHILE
-
the marantz PMD 670 is only 16 bit though!
-
Then again, Sony was going to discontinue the venerable old D-5 back in the early 80's, and the tapers made such a big run on them, they kept them in the line for another 5 years.
If Creative would add line/optical recording capabilities to the JB3 Zen, I'd be 2 or 3 of them. THAT'S a stealth unit.
