Title: noise put into recordings when files are moved on hard drive

I'm not sure how to explain this, but when I play the files directly off my deck they are fine, but when I play the same files that I have transferred onto my hard drive there is a 'chhhhh' noise at no regular interval and the files look mostly red in audacity.

is there anything that can be done to salvage this file set?  I have already deleted a show or two off my deck and only had the files on my portable hard drive.

anyone ever dealt with an issue like this?

You need to understand what is happening.  Do the checksums of the files on the recorder and hard drive match?

I once had a problem that seems identical to yours...  It was an XP box and the IDE controller was on the same interrupt as the soundcard.  So when they were both active the sound card would regularly 'hiccup'.

I've also had files corrupted by DMA issues involving a built-in IDE controller. Again, XP.

^this. I had a recording from last summer I thought was trash listening on 'phones on my lappy, even though it sounded great on the recorder. Glad I didn't delete it. Ended up being an issue with the driver/soundcard. Try another DAW if you can.

from what I can remember I was transferring r4>usb>computer>usb>hdd

what is a daw?

daw = digital audio workstation
. . . basically your computer w associated audio hardware/software/io

hmm, I didn't create md5's when I transferred the files over.  Is that something I should have done or should I do that now?

ok, I will try opening the files on my other laptop.

Is there a way to see if the  music is still there underneath the noise?  then I guess I could apply a filter or something?  I'm very new to audacity and this is way above my pay grade
