Title: Need good stealth mics for taping rock
Post by: drowned_in_milk on March 09, 2004, 09:24:25 PM
OK I'm planning on running an AD20 or MP2 into a JB3... i just need mics!!! It'll be a stealth rig, and i'll prolly use it for taping rock-ier type stuff like Sleater-Kinney or something.  I'm considering the AT853's... can anyone recommend some good mics to check out?  I'm scanning the archive for samples..

Thanks
Steve

AT943
AT853
AT831

All good stealth options.  Depends on how much you want to spend.  You'll want a battery box with stereo level control and bass roll-off too.

I want to keep the whole rig under $1000 max, preferably under $750... I'd spend prolly $350 max on mics (unless there were some REALLY nice ones for a tad more)

$300 for AT853Rx
$350 used MP-2
$180  refurbed JB3

depending on how stealthy you want to go.  Lots of people like the Audix 1290s.

I really like the 853's.  Since I'm new, I want to get something with interchangeable caps, so I can experiment a bit.  Any other mics that I can A: stealth easily, and B: can switch between omni/card?  Also, it seems that the stock 853's are considered better than the less expensive SP counterparts... is this true?

thanks for the help so far!

i think the AT853s are the only mics that size with interchangable caps.  Possibly the ES943s.  And yes, from what I've heard, I believe that the AT853s using phantom power instead of battery power sound much better.
