Title: AK40 -> LC3 -> to Tinybox/PFA?????
Post by: larrysellers on February 08, 2012, 02:19:04 PM
I think the AK caps could be powered with a tinybox if you hacked the proper connectors into the middle of a LC3 pair (kinda like the old style with the Lemo connectors). Has anyone done this yet?

Just because I am curious as well.  Has it been considered by our TS builders?

Yep. Have thought about it many times, especially when there are $250 LC3 cables in the ys. Someone with both caps and bodies would just need to hack the LC3 in half to take the appropriate measurements.

Exactly.  If we could get Ted or Jon on board, it might be worth trying it out.

Jon told me this would work with my KCY tinybox, but I would need an adapter cable.  I ended up getting snipped on the LC3 cables I was trying to buy on ebay so I never went forward with it.

Lc3  > binder adaptor?  Or, something like the KA 100?  Chopping the ends and rewiring the would render them useless with 100 bodies.  But, not that would matter. That is one of the greatest things about Schoeps is the abundance of connection options.  Just fascinated by this stuff.

what do the neumann ak series use for polarization voltage?

When you chop the cables you can add connectors on both halves so they still work with the KM100 body, somewhat like the older LC3 which used a Lemo connector.

So, basically you chop the end terminate with a binder or mini xlr.  Interesting.

@Page - I believe Neumann specifies 50v for polarization and 10v for the FET bias. Some digging found this post (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=86755.msg1159397#msg1159397) from Martin Schneider at Neumann which I will assume is accurate.

If this is correct, someone would still need to hack their LC3 cables so that the FET supply resistance could be measured, but otherwise the project seems straight forward.

the wires in the LC3 are assigned in the following way:
Shield = GND = 0V
white = 10V = outer ring contact
green = 50 V polarization voltage (48V is fine as well) = middle ring contact
brown = signal = central pin.

Please check polarity of the signal, e.g. comparing with standard wired mics. The AKs need -50V to produce correct polarity in unbalanced connections, so probably you will have to invert polarity when mixing with other signals.

Best regards,
Martin Schneider / Neumann Mic. Development

ah, thanks. I knew the ak caps would play nice with a lemosax, but didn't know how close that was.

Same as the AKxx>LC3>Lemosax :)
