SSIA. Just wondering how tehy do without the mod, being run direct xlr p48.
In other words, how are the stock pres?
-
I ran my HDP2 stock for many shows, before upgradingto the Busman Mod and while I am glad I did, I was fine with the stock preamps. The upgrade was a great move but more luxury than necessity.

Thanks brother. I don't have any, nor have seen any tapes made with mics direct in to either of these.
I will be eventually expanding on my rig. I don't even know why because it really is a compact hard to beat rig.
I was thinking of a SD pre and either a dr100MKII, 661, hd-p2. All have phantom so I figured I'd throw it out there.
Any others?

Ditto. :o

That Wmod HDP2 in the YS is an absolute steal IMO. Oade also told me that the HDP2 ADC is equal or superior to most "all in ones". YMMV.
I ran one/two P2's for a few years and if I wasn't running an external ADC now, I'd be running an HDP2. Love that box.
With that said... I'm running a Wmod 661 now and completely dig it.
I'm not familiar with the stock 661 pre's... but if I were strictly running mics > stock deck, I'd go HDP2 hands down (great sounding and user friendliest box around IMO)..... unless size is a concern.
If it's still around and you can do it, go for the Wmod P2. Can't beat that deal!
edit to add: the SD USBPre 2 is fairly reasonably priced and not a huge step up in cost from the 661 or P2.... and it's crazy flexible and sounds awesome IMO. Worth checking out if you have a bit bucket you can throw behind it.

I ran a stock HDP2 for a a few years. I ran an Mini in front of it. Anyway, I did run the HDP2 for 2 or 3 shows stock pre's with my mics. I thought it was perfectly fine. I had no issues, no overs or audiable distortion or brickwalling. The stock pre's sounded fine imho....

I don't have any complaints using stock preamps with the 661. They're much better than a UA5 which I only keep for the occasional "on-the-fly" matrix.
-
I run a stock 661 with a lb , xlrs line-in and am satisfied with the results. I agree with digigal on the comparison with the UA-5 and I have had great results running mics directly into it as well.

Thanks fellas. Seems like I would be good to go with any of the three decks.
The 661 and obviously the HD-P2 have been thoroughly tested. The DR100MKII
appears to be on the same path of success as the others.
Once again fellas, big time thanks for the feedback!
