Title: AKG C 391 B
Post by: flicflac on March 03, 2012, 01:09:28 PM
$600 is is an amazing price, even with the $40 shipping for a pair.
Looks kind of suspect with the "CE" printed towards the bottom.
Does anyone have an idea what that means?

The "CE" mark is legit, its basically a certification/stamp of approval.  I own a pair of 391's they contain the "CE" mark exactly as pictured.  New 391's will have this marking but NOS or used ones may not.  The AKG stock photos used by most dealers were taken before certification.  Another example of AKG's stock photos differing from the actual US products, is the photos of their mic stands and mounts showing 3/8" threads.

Thanks guys for the input. This made my day!
I'm going to snatch up these bad boys for around $600 new, instead of the $850-$1000+ I see them advertised in U.S. stores.

That is a good price for NEW.
Yes, the CE were on mine befor I sold them in 2008.
It stands for Conformance European. The CE mark certifies that the products have met EU health, safety and environmental requirements that ensure consumer and workplace safety.
Too bad they weren't in our yard sale as you would've paid at least $200 less. In 2008 I sold mine for $300.
A great price but it is known that OUR yardsale here at TS usually has great re-sale prices.
People here are great about that stuff. If they get a deal they pass it on.

Congrats.

If it was me, I'd try to find a used pair of 461 (460 bodies plus ck61 caps) for that price.  Having owned both, that is how I'd go.  Used 391's can be had for around 350.  just a thought.

Indeed. Both Vanark and myself did the exact same thing. In fact I sold my 391's to Rory and got 460/ck1 pair.
A little while later Rory became a SEA-LUTTT-SKI and sold his 391's for some 461's and then 481's.
You are in a win situation go for it!!!!!!
You will enjoy your pulls with either I'm sure.

I agree for $600 I would look for a set of used 460's!!

All of that would be great if there was in fact a used pair to be had.
But there isn't. I have been looking also. Hoping to snag my old set-up 460/ck1.

Yep, but they do come up if you are willing to wait a bit, esp. the ck61 flavor.  There were recently two sets on the YS.  Another will come along soon probably.

ETA: There is a set here with CK62's also: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=152459.0.

You might want to pm chinariderstl I sold him my 391's!!  I know he bought some 461's so he might be willing to sell his.  Again I'm not sure he would sell, but you can always ask.

ditto ditto here.  have 391/392 from which I use mostly the 92 cap as an omni center.  My primaries are the vintage senns, but love the 461 pair equally.  I put most of that pair together on ebay for 650 total (i think) including one brand new 61 cap from b & h.  ebay has a few 460 bodies with 61 caps out there for 200 each.  Either way you can't go wrong, but the 460 is more body for the price.  Good luck

Nope. They're mine  >:D

He just hasn't updated the post. Ran the 62s on Friday. Fat, meaty full AKG goodness. I thought long and hard about 391s, but I'm glad I waited to get the 460s. Keep your eyes on the YS and eBay, they show up regularly and you won't regret it!

Yeah, I see those on ebay. Kind of banged up, though..
Not to mention the ones for around $200 do not have caps.

$200 for a body is about right on eBay. Should be about $200 per cap too (CK61). You can do better here if you're patient. My setup is 2 bodies, 2 CK61s, 2 CK62s, I paid ~$900 in the YS. They all have blemishes, they're over 20 yrs old after all, but they work splendidly. The new version (480) is about that for one complete mic! Many will say the 460 is sonically superior for what we do. I tend to agree. 391s will make nice tapes, but a 460 or 480 will blow them out of the water IMHO.

Def go for 460/480, or Busman Actives are in that price range!
