Title: recording different sample rates and rec modes on same sdhc card on an r9
Post by: bonghitwillie on March 04, 2012, 02:08:25 PM
i usually rec at 24/48. sometimes the cards fill up and i will rec at 16/44 on a sdhc card that already has several 24/48 files on it. a couple of times when i did this, the 16/44 files would not play back.  they were on the sdhc, but i could not do anything with the data. my question is, should i only record one sample rate/rec mode on a card? not mix and match?

I can't imagine why it would be a problem, either.  If it is, dump the files more often and re-format the card.

It depends on the recorder, some are OK, others insist on the same file type.

What happened when you transferred the files to a computer, was that OK?

Personally I would carry a spare SD card and use that for the different file type.

If this has only happened to you a few times but worked fine others, the problem probably had more to do with using a card that's nearly full than mixing your sample rate and bit depth.

I bet that's it.  I also did it on the R09 without problems a few times.  I always found the Edirol recorders not overly picky about formating and file types.

I've never had an issue with this on either my old Edirol R09 or my Sony PCM-M10 especially when using a quality Class 10 card.  I had a Class 6 card in the Edirol R09 once and it did have a "slow write" issue one time (luckily nothing was missed) but it was because the card had become fragmented from deleting little files in-between the bigger ones.

I always make it a habit to format my card (in the recorder) every once in a while to keep this from happening.

You *should* format your card after *every* night of recording ;)

YMMV

eh, whenever it fills to the point where I would need to delete something to make enough space is often enough for me.  I've only had trouble after making multiple rounds of file deletions without a re-format, and even then it's rare.  Format when full I say.

Fully agree.  No need to keep reformatting the card prematurely.

Getting a good quality card is key.  Class?  Not so much.  A good class 2 is amply fast enough for 24/96 stereo...

Personally, I agree with Bean on the formatting.  It's just cheap insurance.  Like changing batteries every show in my M10.  I know I don't have to do it, but it's easy peace of mind.
