Title: 460,480 always matched?
Post by: flicflac on March 05, 2012, 07:49:04 PM
I read somewhere that the AKG 460/480 craftsmanship is so strict that they are all built very close to matched?
Is this true?

I haven't heard that before, but I'm not an AKG expert, just a fluffer.  My 480s are close, but I balance the levels L/R anyway so it would be hard to tell for sure unless they were off by 5 dB or so.

Caps age and get out of balance....I had one CK61 that got about 5db hot...ended up replacing both caps for peace of mind and they are now very close....but I bet I could have gotten away with just one...

Since that time I had one body/Preamp board go bad...just fixed the one and there is virtually no difference between the new and old

So, It's the capsules that may go out of balance? Does it matter much about buying separate single 460 bodies?

I know there are Two Types of 460 bodies...one version has three switches...I have the version that looks like the current 480 one switch with three positions so I can't comment on the matching of the two types

 my two are identical

Ted would be one to ask, I swear he's had a bunch of caps tested to try and find sets that went well with each other throughout the frequency range. He would have a handle on how well that works out.

It came today. It looks good, damn near mint, but I won't be able to test it out until tomorrow.

I might have a mint pair of 460's coming my way real soon to match up with the mint 61's I just picked up. In that case this one may go right back up on ebay, or perhaps right here on TS. Thanks for your help, bro. I appreciate it.

I've got a couple of capsules (bought separately, serials are miles apart) which are about 5dB apart too- I just don't use them in a stereo pair.  I've requested a matched pair before and been told AKG don't offer the service.  From the measurement plots both capsules were within 1dB though and the serials were about 20 or so apart.

I've also got some bought separately, with very different serials which do match (to my ears and meters) although haven't seen what they're like on proper measurement equipment
