Curious to hear what experience you guys have with different mics and recorder combos.
From my experience I tend to lean towards liking (relatively at least) darker/muddier mics (such as countryman b3, schoeps mk4) combined with my Edirol r09-HR (that I think sounds "brighter" than the sony m10) and brighter mics (nevaton mce400 and Milab VM-44) with the sony m10.
Would be interesting to hear if there is any particular "reason" for this or if it´s just my imagination :p
Any particular mic+recorder combo that really shines btw?
/N.

Funny, I feel like the M10 is a smidge brighter than the R-09HR. But that could just be me.
IME the preamps matter more on this than the actual recorder, unless you are running an all in one box. I know the Oade mod on the R-44, and I'd imagine on his other decks, is specifically intended to make the pres a bit brighter to compensate for the loss of HF in the situations we typically encounter.

I tend to like my raw recordings with Edirol R09-HR + MK4s abit more than the Sony M10 + Mk4. Not sure this really matters in the end though since some post roll off and some sizzle bump EQ usually makes miracles to the rawmasters and brightens up the recording alot!
The Nevaton MCE400 frequency response already has some roll off and some boost around 9khz and in my opinion I think they sound abit smoother (and more "balanced") with the M10 compared to the ER 09HR. Same with the Milabs so that´s why I´m wondering if anyone else had the same idea that flat mics sound better with the ER09-HR and brighter mics (with roll off and HF bump) sounds better with M10. It might just be a coincidence or my imagination though...

So you use a battery box instead of an ext pre?
I was just going to state the obvious that bright and dark can change easily with an ext pre.
I'm pretty sure most folks achieve "full rig balance" with that exercise.
