Title: Waka taping WAY FOB.
Post by: BlingFree on May 08, 2012, 03:03:09 PM
This year I have a chance to run my stand from the VIP section which, again checking against memory, only goes out about 50ft?

I've seen suggestions in other threads that work well with the fact that I have cardioid caps. ORTF or DIN w/ caps beat out other FOB configurations in a poll in 2006.

With Wakarusa we have a situation where the Main stage has the large stacks left and right then subs along the bottom and even a center channel if memory serves correct. Wondering how much this changes the game and if running max height would get less of the sub action

Any opinions? ..and does the same config work with cards for that sort of FOH setup?

TY!

Not sure how the akg's sound in NOS but my mc930's (cards) sounded great out door fob around 20' to 35' away from the stage ;D

Cards/Subcards/Hypers in ORTF/DIN/DINa/NOS!

I LOVE running hypers from that close, because you get a KILLER recording in DINa w/ MINIMAL CHATTER :)

but you do lose something by using hypers IMO.
i'd say card ORTF would be the best of both worlds, you get the thump of the cards
and since you are in a VIP section it may already be quieter!

Thank you for the input! I'm getting excited about this. The first band that I'm taping is ALO and I really want to get that right... so maybe I should record the band before and do some quality control between sets.

Not maybe, but definitely.  If you have the chance to experient with a few options and can compare then more better.

I disagree. mk41s are special and do NOT sound like other hypers/supercards

i have also had great results with hypers up very close but like tito said, unless it was a chatty spot or the hypers were the only thing in my bag, i would use the cards that close.

I guess now I'm figuring out why I've never ran DIN or ORTF before.

Any advice on getting the caps so close with these bodies in the way? I've seen people run one mic slightly higher than the other. Does it affect the mics not being on that same plane? Does it matter if I can't raise a mic so the result is one pointing slightly up and one pointing slightly down?

I'm using the AKG KM235 stereo bar, btw.

arrrg!

You need a riser or one of the screws that goes into the shockmount to be longer.
If it were me, Id go cards in a super wide (ortf) config.

They allow taping from the vip? When I went a few years ago I recall the section being in the normal spot and didnt see anyone taping from VIP. Going high might be an issue.

I think  the only reason no one was there was because no one has tried. Once I saw a vid cam on a stick from VIP... doesn't hurt to get turned down.

Pat's turned out awesome!

Mine turned out SUPER bass heavy!

Interesting note...

DaveWave's recordings were done from the VIP section except he decided to run directly in front of the left stack, in FRONT of the VIP cage. VERY safe spot and very acceptable results. Doesnt capture that stereo love but usually FOH stacks don't deliver on the stereo love. Would be very interested in trying this with a slightly better set of microphones.

Having said that it doesnt sound nearly as good as Pat's source. Almost too full for my playback :)

Here's a master list of everything circulated form Waka 2012 so far..
