Ramble with Phil Lesh
5/12/12
Terrapin Crossroads, San Rafael, CA
Source: Tascam iM2 > iPhone > WAV (44.1kHz, 16 bits) > Peak 6.20 > TRack 3 > FLAC (xACT 2.15)

I'll believe it when I hear it...

Marking thread.

Has anyone grabbed this? I am at work so I can't even sample it.
-
listening to 'West L.A...', I am enjoying the interplay and the sultry vocals...gotta say it ain't the worse I've heard...definitely not in the grade A category, but the taper got 'er done. Great for the archives, but lacking the clarity that is essential to phatty Phil bombs.
-
I grabbed it. Not bad for what it is. Phil allows no recording in that place, so it's >:D or nothing. The only thing I don't like about this recording is the same thing I don't like about any stealth recording. The conversations of all in the recordists area.

i wonder about the tascam im2 if its mounted or clipped to a stand, elevated, how it would sound. like a zoom, r-26 or pcm-d1 on a stand.
i key word searched lma, but found no matches for a sample.

In their blurb on the Tascam IM2 they have the statement below. Looks like they know who their target audience is. http://tascam.com/product/im2/
"Unlike mics that use the built-in iPhone preamp, the iM2 can handle up to 125dB sound levels to capture the loudest concerts and instruments without distortion."
The mics are directional AB, so it will probably sound better than the little internals which are omni (like the R09). Since you don't have a problem getting in with a phone, all you have to do is get this little thing in, which should be easy. It records 16/44 data without compression, not state of the art, but better than MP3. I predict they will sell at least a few, and we'll have a whole new batch of "tapers" with shows on DIME. Probably with A++++ ratings. ;D

For 80 bucks that is a pretty damn easy way to make a recording. I find myself actually not hating this thing. For a show I didn't care that much about, and/or didn't want to deal with gear at, it seems like a fairly decent solution.

Similar features to Blue Microphones' "Mikey" for the iPhone. > http://www.bluemic.com/mikey_for_ipod/ (http://www.bluemic.com/mikey_for_ipod/)

It is so offensive that Phil forbids taping at his new GD shrine.

FWIW: Someone mentioned that at one Terrapin Crossroads show last month there were problems that took the house stream down. Phil asked if any tapers would be able to provide a stream but no luck as they had all left their gear behind due to the NO TAPING policy. If this happens often enough maybe the policy will be adjusted.

Stunning. Its obvious the no taping rule is Jill's idea. Phil has no idea of this rule or why would ask for tapers assistance?
-
Phil's website now says to please keep your recording devices hidden. No mention of no taping policy.

it looks so easy to lighten your load. id love to hear what they sound like in an iphone recording (i dont have an iphone.).
i think placement is the name of the game w/ these mics.
what if you get a phone call? :-\

Should be able to put the phone in airplane mode.

What are y'all doing on the left Coast that the NO RECORDING policy isn't being defiantly exploited? Slackers. Two shows like that here on the East and the weird get pro...

Just got an email from Rode, looks like they've jumped into the market too with their iXY mic from iPhone / iPad.

Just got the email from Rode as well and I must say it looks much better than the Tascam product.

First thing that I have seen that seems fairly legit - decent mic manufacturer, decent mics, app that can go to 24/96. I bet this is at least as good as internals on any deck. On the downside, iPhone would be interesting to mount. I guess there are those adjustable mini-tripod things that you could put on a stand easily enough.
-
I assume Rode's engineering department is better than their marketing copy writer- http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=160099.msg2014554#msg2014554 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=160099.msg2014554#msg2014554)
I'm not an i-guy, but what this could benefit from is an i-thing connector extention cable. Does that already exist? Possible?

I assume an adapter cable would work?

Very cool the app can do 24-bit, this looks like it has potential to pull decent recordings.

A don't know much about this recording but listened to the archive version. Listened on headphone and home stereo. Kudos for the taper trying something new and what makes live recording so much fun. Definitely a fun listen to but too much high end for me (higher frequency boost) that kind of hurts in the headphones. However, the show may have been mixed like this too, may be a reason to allow open taping at the venue. Do we always need the mics 7' or higher in the air and block peoples vision to get a good recording? The drummer probably loves this recording.
