Title: Clamping with Matthews Baby Extension
Post by: djphrayz on May 20, 2012, 06:06:44 PM
Newb here looking for some more clamping insight.  I have already purchased the Matthews Telescopic Baby Stand Extension - 18 - 54" (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/33185-REG/Matthews_429499_Telescopic_Baby_Stand_Extension.html/) and have a few questions.  The pole has a 5/8" male stud on one end and corresponding female "socket" on the other, and my first question is: what adapter do I need to buy to adapt the 5/8" stud to a standard 5/8" mic thread?  I tried searching the B&H website but had no luck.

Second, I was wondering what the best clamp would be to clamp to either an armrest or a rail.  Is there a "best" clamp that would be versatile enough for both applications?  What other hardware would I need to attach my Matthews extension to this clamp?

Any help in these matters would be greatly appreciated.  The pics and specs seem to poorly address the matter of clamp application and necessary hardware.  Nothing compares to holding one in your hand.

To go from pin to mic thread pick up a man droits rapid adapter, which gives you 3/8 thread, then use a 3/8 to 5/8 adapter.

I use a super clamp with stud for most clamping situations

I overlooked your second question.  As already mentioned, the Superclamp is very versatile and will work in lots of situations:

However, its jaws only open maybe an inch and a half or so.  There are lots of situations where this doesn't work for me, so for thicker flat surfaces, this is popular:

For thicker round surfaces, I have this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/301945-REG/Matthews_420210_Matthelini_Grip_6_End.html

And this is a valuable accessory for the Superclamp, which allows you to change orientations if your only clamping surface is a vertical post:

Without this, you need to clamp the Superclamp to something horizontal.

When I first got into taping I worried about the hardware at the top of my stand and I remember getting mega stressed when something happened to the hardware...it got damaged or bent or something.  Then someone suggested clampinhg to my stand with a Windtech c-clamp. I bought a couple of them for $15 our so each and I never worried about the hardware on my stand after that. Thats the route I`d go.
